Feeling stuck after a good start!
Hi

I’m looking for some weaning advice. My LO is 29 weeks (7 months next week) and I started weaning him a few weeks early at 24 weeks so have been weaning him about a month.

We had a really good start with weaning and we are on three meals a day with mixed veg purées for lunch and dinner and ready brek for breakfast with a fruit purée. Some days he eats less than others and some days eats all of his food.

I’m trying to get him to eat textured foods and introduce him to new tastes such as chicken, lentils etc and it is having a very lukewarm response. He also doesn’t really seem to get the idea of finger food and is not having any of it. I’m worried we will be stuck on veg and fruit purées forever.

Any advice on where I go from here to help him progress or is it just a case of persevering? Also when he rejects something say at lunch or dinner do I offer him anything else and should I not be giving him fruit purée and yogurt after (he wolfs that down!!) I’m worried I’m giving him a sweet tooth but also that if I don’t give him something else he is not getting enough food!!

It’s so stressful 😂! Any tips or advice would be gratefully received xx

Firstly, really don’t stress if he rejects anything. It can take 20 times of offering before they accept sone foods and milk should be filling them up at this age rather than solids. So there is absolutely no need to offer an alternative Smile

Keep trying with the finger foods too. Maybe give him something to —lick and play with— eat while you are getting his purée ready. Things to try are cubes of cheese, halved grapes, a banana (Yiu can split a banana naturally from the top), any fruit really, hummus and breadsticks, cheese straws, strips of chicken. Almost anything can be a finger food Smile

Thanks so much! You are right I really do need to try not to stress. I worry he will only eat fruit purée and yogurt for the rest of his life but of course in reality it won’t happen! It’s just so disheartening when he rejects something he liked a few days before or just outright rejects it! I will try offering finger foods while getting the purée ready that’s a good idea. I currently offer him a toy so he can start playing with food like you said! Thank you xx

Absolutely no problem Smile

As above, he doesn't need good yet so it's just about exploring and learning. So keep offering and don't stress :)

I agree - don't stress! Food is for fun at this age Grin 7 month old DS is just the same. Last week he was going mad for fish pie, this week he acts like I'm trying to poison him.

Keep trying with finger foods. DS loves watermelon (seeds removed obviously!) but isn't keen on much else. If he absolutely hates a purée, I tend to dump it out on his high chair tray and let him explore it for himself. Nine times out of ten, he puts some in his mouth on his own.

Oh Grin and he likes stuff in jelly. I sometimes put one of his dummies in jelly and let him dig it out. Gets him used to different textures and makes food a bit more exciting.

Thank you xx Makes me feel less anxious about introducing a fish and veg purée for lunch he blatantly will spit back out in predicting 😂😂. Will try to relax and go with the flow xxx
