Breakfast. CMPA. Severe reflux (GERD)

Morning all!
Little one is 25 weeks old. He’s been having cow and gate banana and strawberry porridge as it contains no milk. I’m nearing the end of the packet and wanting to try him on something else for breakfast. Has anyone any suggestions please? I have seen cow and gate tropical fruity cereal but it says from 7 months but I’m sure I’ve read that’s because of texture? It’s milk and gluten free. He has his porridge quite thick now.
Also I’ve managed to confuse myself with gluten and grains etc. Under six months they can’t have them? Is that correct please?
Weaned early then stopped but have started again over two weeks ago and he’s doing really well.
Thank you all and I appreciate your breakfast ideas! 🌸😊

From 24 weeks, most things are fine to try. Both my DDs were CMPI as babies. One was on neocate, the other bf. I didn't really use the baby food breakfasts. I often used to give ready brek - it is just finely milled oats. DD1 had it made with neocate, DD2's was made with either expressed milk or the soya milk for toddlers. DD1 was also unable to have egg or wheat but you could try eggs and toast fingers etc for your DS.

Smellybears · 09/07/2018 10:32

I was wondering when I could try him on toast but wasn’t sure if he’d have to be a little older. Have they both grown out of their allergies and if so what age?

My twins were CMPI (one is now CMPA) and we have to avoid soy as well, but we didn't need to avoid gluten. The breakfasts at that age that I did were:

Porridge made with oat milk (could you do oatibix? I haven't seen the ingredient list but could be good if gluten free?)
Toasted bagel with dairy free spread (bagel is diary and soy free - could you use a gluten free bread for toast?)
Selection of fruits
Scrambled eggs
Cheerios are fortified with calcium and dairy/soy free - you could use warmed milk to make them a bit mushy? Also good as a snacky food once you are happy for them to crunch a bit. Shreddies too my pair loved.

I hope that helps a little bit. It's a bit of a faff to sort food for intolerance and allergies but it soon gets into a habit.

Childrenofthesun · 09/07/2018 10:43

Yes, both grew out of it by 2. They were intolerant rather than allergic though - symptoms were all reflux and digestion-related. Neither of them like the taste of cow's milk now though.

Bread is fine from 24 weeks (or it was when I was last weaning 5 years ago!)

Smellybears · 09/07/2018 10:45

Thank you for shredders and Cheerios, I hadn’t thought of those!
Can I use ‘normal’ porridge oats? I’m thinking I can then flavor with some pear which he likes.
I have an appointment on Friday with the specialist. There’s been no mention of me to avoid soy/gluten but I will ask her on Friday just to confirm. I feel a bit lost with it all to be honest as his feeding nurse who he sees every few weeks isn’t that great.

Breakfast. CMPA. Severe reflux (GERD)

It’s good to hear that they can grow out of it. I’ve already been told that his reactions were severe and to expect him to take longer to grow out of it. His reflux is still up and down, some days he’s great others awful. He is on medication for it.
Introducing foods I am a little nervous but excited that he’s enjoying new tastes and doing well.

I’ve been looking at a cmpa support website but unfortunately I’m not on any social media.

Normal oats are great. Cook with breastmilk/formula and flavour with fruit. If you get big oats you can blitz them in a good processor to make it a bit quicker to cook.

Childrenofthesun · 09/07/2018 10:57

Normal porridge is fine. I just used ready brek because the oats have been flaked to make a smoother texture. DD1 had very severe reflux but grew out of it completely. The vomiting stopped by around a year although she had some other digestive issues until she was around two. It is often recommended to avoid soya as many of those with CMPI also have trouble with soya. DD2 was ok with it but with DD1 I used oatly - it can be used in cooking from 6 months so long as either breast or formula milk is the main drink.

Smellybears · 09/07/2018 10:57

I’ll give the porridge oats a whizz then try him with those! Thank you!
What’s the deal with adult cereals and sugar/salt content? I think that’s maybe why I haven’t thought of shredded etc due to sugar and salt.
Sorry for sounding stupid, FTM and also very wary and nervous of getting things wrong with his cmpa.

Can I give weetabix? They’re low in salt and sugar

OP posts:
GrumpyGoose · 09/07/2018 18:17

You can give weetabix but it can be a bit much for a lot of baby's tummies and cause constipation and the weetabix poos can be messy! Friend found her LG was much better on oatabix x

Smellybears · 09/07/2018 19:50

I’ll get him some oatibix, thank you! What other things are you all feeding for breakfast?

I'm a fan of porridge fingers, we have toast quite often as we're under orders to give nut butters frequently to ward off any nut allergies (he's high risk) mine's 10mo now and is a fan of picking up dry Cheerios and shreddies that have been dipped in milk then placed on his tray

GrumpyGoose · 10/07/2018 15:35

Once you introduce egg I think omelette fingers and eggs bread go down well but sadly we're egg free too 😭

Smellybears · 10/07/2018 15:54

SOUnds like you’re having a tough time too grumpygoose

GrumpyGoose · 12/07/2018 23:21

It's a real pain! Milk, egg, soya and sweet corn are off the menu so far. It gets easier though! Have you seen a dietitian? They can provide useful info, our HV referred us x

Smellybears · 13/07/2018 08:31

I’m waiting for a dietician appointment to come through, apparently it can be a bit of a wait though.

Shredded wheats / fruit wheats
Porridge (no need to whiz down the oats) just make with non dairy milk
Crumpets (warburtons and Aldi both dairy free)
Bagels most are dairy and soy free
Aldi bread for toast is dairy and soy free - add peanut butter (a whole nut one not sunpat) for protein

GrumpyGoose · 13/07/2018 08:41

Yes ours took a while too!

Agree with Nanosecond on the nut butters. We had to incorporate nuts 2x weekly to ward off but allergies as it were because he's high risk for them, Tesco do pure nut butters at the best price I've seen, I use peanut, cashew, and I think they do an almond one but I haven't gotten that one yet.

Nan0second · 13/07/2018 09:37

Aldi has cheap v high quality almond and peanut butters that are just nuts.

Smellybears · 13/07/2018 15:20

Thank you all!
Saw the speacislist today and she said wait till he’s at least 7 months till I give him bread (obviously milk free bread).
I explained how much he’s living his food and she said to introduce his third meal (lunch) in about a week.
