My DS is 6 months now and so we’d like to start weaning, however we cannot seem to get it right. I have questions as I’ve read so many things on Dr Google:

How much milk? I’ve seen usual amount and 17-20oz mentioned

When is the best time of day to put food into his routine? I’ve tried a couple of teaspoons around 5pm, but he has projectiled both times. It was only puréed carrot!

Routine:
7am formula milk
11am FM
3pm FM
7:30pm FM

If anyone could give me advice, particularly on how to avoid a projectile vomit, I’d be eternally grateful.

Thanks

Forgot to mention, he has between 6-8oz per feed, although in this heat it’s been more like 4-5oz, is this enough?

I didnt FF but there is a phrase food under 1 is for fun. It probably wpnt provide too much nourishment at this stage wspecially if baby led weaning but it will get him used to smells tastes and textures. I bet he will start to drop his milk himself x

I did finger foods any time we were eating, so breakfast and dinner (early with dd1). I’d suggest start by just putting eg carrot batons on her high chair and don’t fret.

When we were eating and she was awake.

Try not to overthink it! I’m bf and continue to feed on demand (baby also 6months) and for you formula should continue to be the main source of food. Think of food more of a fun new experience for another few months. A few times a day give them little tastes and maybe even introduce a cup/beaker too. Just relax and have fun with it. If you miss a day at this point it won’t matter either.

Thanks all, I just want to be sure I’m ‘doing it right’ but of course, there is no right. We actually gave him a break on Saturday and no projectile, phew!

As I have OCD, once something’s in my head, I find it hard to shake it off; reading your comments has helped though. I’ll try to give my head a wobble and go with the flow Smile

I decided today to just give him the milk he wants rather than try to stick to a schedule: he’s had 14oz so far and some pea purée with no sick - hooray!

I'd start with lunch first, gives you a chance to get medical help if there are any reactions and also give him time to digest a bit before bed.
Start with a spoon or two then increase. Or look at baby led weaning. Don't drop any milk feeds until he's taking about the size of his closed fist. I'd feed his bottle first then about 30-45 mins later offer solids to make sure he's getting all the milk he needs and doesn't drop feeds too quickly.
There's a great book by Dr Rana Conway called Weaning Made Easy that covers starting out right up til toddlerhood and has recipes etc as well as straightforward advice. It's great!

I'd highly recommend blw. I've done both puree (with my first) and blw (with 2nd). I much preferred blw. Just cook exactly what your having and give lo some to try and explore. If they miss a mealtime due to having a nap then don't worry. As previous poster said food before one is just for fun.

MrsHandles · 09/07/2018 16:54

Thank you all! I really want to try BLW, so will give that a go tomorrow. I have no intention of dropping bottles just yet, have no fear there, I just think if I get stressed about it he will too. Thank you all again. Grin

My DS took a long time to wean, he was a vomiter! He would gag on the slightest lump, and would vomit his entire stomach contents (yes the lot, including anything he’d kept down from earlier in the day, until he was retching). It was awful. We took it really slowly, and when BLW clearly wasn’t working, we started with purees in small amounts, kept up the milk feeds, and slowly introduced foods. He is doing really well now.
I think they are all individuals and do things in their own time, with their own preferences! Just keep trying! If BLW isn’t right for your ds now, it might be in time.

MrsHandles · 10/07/2018 20:33

Thank you icelollies it’s good to hear that the ‘evil’ purées are still being used by some folk. He’s really enjoying taking the spoon and putting it in his mouth himself. Which ‘meal’ did you start with?
