Mum in need of help!!

I have started my little one with food the last month and since starting food she has begun showing little interest in her milk.

She was having 5-6oz of milk every 4 hours and taking the majority of it. Since starting food she will now only take 3-4oz with a battle! She takes two out of 5 bottles a day fine (her bedtime bottle and night feed) -and will drink that all but her day bottles are hit and miss and it's stressing me out!! angry

Her feeding routine is:
Milk when wakes up around 8am (hit and miss, can drink between 3-4oz) and then I will give her porridge after her bottle and use the leftover milk in her breakfast. I will then offer her next bottle around 12-30-1pm as she doesn't cry for it but it's been over 4 hours but she very rarely will drink well (has aroun 2-3oz) and then i will give her a evening bottle at 5-6pm, yet again she won't cry for one and she is much the same.. 3oz. She then has a veggie dinner around 6.30pm after her evening bottle is given.

I am offering her milk every 4 hours to make sure she is hydrated and having her daily allowance but she doesn't seem hungry for milk. I have also tried cutting down her food and giving her more milk but she was more upset not getting food and was hungrier without food than without milk.

I am just stressing she isn't getting enough milk as I know milk is more important under 1 but I'm fighting a loosing battle with her!! sad

In an average day she has about 25-27oz with two meals.

I'm just after advice and if anyone else's little ones were the same and how to go about getting more milk in her grin

Keep going with the weaning......using milk in her foods if you need to. Milk before one is usually just for fun can Often be referencing those that don't eat much solids

I think I went from 4 bottles to bottles within about a week at 8 months as baby was getting fuller from the solids......

Mummytobella2018x · 02/07/2018 14:44

Should I not worry so much about the milk?? She has two 6oz bottles before I go to bed at 11 and then another during the night so she has 12oz between thise two bottles and the others are around 3-4oz a time for the other 3??

That's a lot of milk! My baby was on 2 x 7oz bottles a day at 8 months........one at night and one when he got up! X

Can't really remember....all a bit of a blur! Prob around 4 X 7 oz over a 24 hour period.
I started sleep training after that so increased solids and dropped milk!

It sounds like she's progressing with weaning well. I good approximate figure to work to in the toddler years is 1 pint, which us 21oz of milk.

As baby moves away from milk being their primary source if calories, it ultimately becomes just another aspect of a healthy diet (like protein, carbs, fats, water, vitamins etc). A child should be having about a pint a day. But that does include milk in the form of yoghurt, uses in cooking, as part if cereal and so on. So if you're giving a couple of bowls of yoghurt (full fat, low sugar) and some porriage, that might take it down to 10-15oz minimum needed for drinks.

If baby still isn't taking that amount (and it sounds like he is) just increase the dairy content of his solids diet - more cheese, cheese spread, add cream to sauces and soft veg, plenty of yoghurt and so on. It's dnturely possible to get a pint if dairy into a child's diet without them drinking any milk.

Hi OP - there is absolutely no reason to worry:). 25-27oz is still plenty of milk. Those mumsnetters who read my posts probably think I sound like a broken record but "food before one..." phrase does not have much research based backing.

The general recommendation on milk intake for 7 to 9 month old babies is around 600mls (20oz) a day.

Your baby will turn 7 months before you know it so it is actually very good news she likes her solids.

Thanks everyone I feel better now! I'm glad she likes her food Smile I'll carry on what I'm doing and using her milk in porridge and more dairy Grin
