Hello fellow mummies,

My little one has just turned 10 months and she's hardly eating anything even though I give her 3 meals a day. I actually don't see the point of introducing snacks yet until she's eating and reducing her bottles? Though I understand the bottles need to be replaced with a snack, however how is this achieved when your LO just isn't swallowing enough?

We've had the to change her formula to CMPA these last few weeks, so avoiding dairy until I see a dietitian next week. Because of the lack of eating she's also on 5 bottles during the day and 1 during the night sometimes.

She loved Greek yogurt that was one of the only things she seemed excited about having, however some meals she's just not interested.

Everything is homemade and I'm starting to feel quite despondent and sad as I genuinely wanted to introduce her to a healthy range of foods in the hope she would be a child that eats fairly well (not expecting miracles as I know children are fickle).

I do get some glimmers of hope as she ate a tiny piece of chicken the other week and swallows tiny pieces of tomato, but most food that does go in to her mouth just seems to reappear back out. 🙈

Anyway guess it would be good to hear stories of babies that weren't great at 10 months plus but did improve? She's also on the 9th percentile so not a big baby so not expecting her to eat loads.

Thanks in advance xxx

It could be that you just need to find the right kind of food for her.

What about soft fruit as finger food, great at this time of year. And toast with something spread on it is always a winner.

  • whole raspberries or blackberries
  • halced strawberries
  • whole banana (or slices for less mess)
  • peeled peach quaters
  • toast and butter. Or toast and...
  • peanut butter
  • hummus
  • avocado
  • cream cheese
  • jam or chocolate spread

Until we had baby getting good sized portions from 'proper' (ie non mushed) food, my meals took the following form:

  1. Start with a full jar of 6m baby puree, spoonfed
  2. Then a selection of whatever the rest if the family were having, as whole food to eat with fingers
  3. Then yoghurt, spoon-fed
  4. Then sliced fruit, as finger food.

This meant that (1) and (3) were always eaten - a savoury and a sweet. But there were also a sweet and savoury proper food courses too. I started like this at 6 months.
Within 3 months the portions eaten as finger good was enough to drop the purees completely and move straight to food along with the rest of the family.

@FATEdestiny thanks for your reply. I started with BLW but then moved to a combination of BLW and spoon feeding by 7 months. The spoon feeding was going ok but now and only occasionally she will let me spoon feed her.

she now she has her top teeth and she just likes to clamp her teeth on the spoon.

In terms of what I feed her prior to being dairy free was.

Breakfast

Mushed avocado with cream sometimes
Omelette with kale and cheese
Greek yogurt which she absolutely loves only find that had she not eaten much she would always be enthusiastic about yogurt
Fresh strawberries, raspberries, grapefruit
Pancakes with yogurt and banana
Sugar free banana muffins
Scrambled eggs
Watermelon fingers
Blueberries

Lunch would be a mixture of some of the below

Mackerel pate homemade. Fresh mackerel blitz wth olive oil and lemon. Spread on rice crackers and only try and see if she will take a spoon of the pate
Homemade hummus
Cheese spread on crackers
Toast with cashew or almond butter
Tomatoes
Homemade red kidney bean spread
Courgette frittata
Cooked salmon

Dinner
Spaghetti bolognese
Baby version of Thai curry
Tomato chicken thighs with coriander and mild Indian spices
Steak and sweet potato chips, peas
Pasta with fresh tomato sauce homemade
BBQ chicken and red pepper and onion kebabs
Chicken livers and steam veg. (Do this meal once a week or every other week because of the iron boost)
Falafels
Turkey burgers with broccoli

Some of these dishes I whizz up like the Thai chicken and load onto a spoon. I also give her pieces of chicken as she good at tearing bits of now and eating some. Hopefully a spoon of the blended meal will get something into her. None of the dishes are spicy actually quite bland. We have done spicy food and she's tried a bit but she's not keen so generally all the recipes are from Baby cook books.

Because of developing CMPA, I spoke to a dietician who said the things she is having sound great. At the moment she has to stay on the CMPA formula tried to introduce normal formula but symptoms returned. A separate issue is the fact she's still not eating enough to drop a bottle. Still on 5 bottles sometimes 4 but has dropped the night feed again. She starts off really enthusiastically with eating but quickly drifts off and starts windscreen wiping the high chair tray.

Sorry for super long post, I think I'll just have to keep going and hope she gets better by 1yrs. She is going to nursery in a September so it may improve then as she'll be there 3 days a week and will see the other little ones eating.

Oh to add she tracking just below the 9th percentile and is a very dainty baby. So not expecting her to eat huge amounts, but I guess she needs to eat a meal the size of her palm?

ILoveDolly · 09/07/2018 07:42

As she is under one and not a huge baby I would try not to worry, feed her the cpma feeds and continue introducing her to nice feeds and tastes as you are doing. Don't they say "food before one is just for fun". Personally I wouldn't be expecting her to want lots of food yet until you drop some feeds, which wouldn't necessarily be right at her age. It will all come in time!

Why don't you reduce the amount of bottles you give her? X
