salt?

Ok so this is probably really old ground...

My nearly 7 month old loves bread in all its forms and also cheese. I've just shocked myself with the amount of salt in each.

Any ideas on a sensible ration (one slice a day?)

ask at cheese counter for low salt cheese good luck

Making your own bread is the easiest way to cut down on salt. We make our own & only use 1tsp per loaf. Means DS can have much more than I would want if he were having commercial bread. Also worth googling for cheese & salt as I found a document a while ago which listed the different types of cheese & their salt content...would link it here but havnt got acccess to my favourites atm...

Please can someone reassure me that it is ok for a 6 month old to eat of your plate in restaurants or do you need to request a 'no salt' version?? I am worried that DD would get too much salt if marinades / gravies etc are on the plate. How do you deal with that??

ruddynorah · 27/05/2007 22:27

for a 6 month old i would just hand over veg really, no sauce or marinade. or i'd go to places i knew i could get food suitable for her.

Aitch · 27/05/2007 22:34

i used to take stuff out for dd in the beginning, steamed veg and such, but then if i was getting a salad i'd get the dressing on the side and pull some stuff out for her.

restaurants do over-use salt, imo, and i really feel it because i don't add salt to things. if you're getting chips, for example, ask for them not to be salted. same with veg, it's easy enough to say to the waitress 'i'm goinig to share these with the baby so would you ask the chef not to salt them?'
sauces and things it's difficult to do that, tbh, so i used to give dd bread and chips etc from restaurants (although bread can be quite salty too) and gve her green thigns from my stash.

Great thank you - how do you stop them throwing all your food everywhere too???? What age can they use a highchair? Oh how ignorant am I

Aitch · 27/05/2007 22:41

you just have to try a highchair and see. can the baby sit up? i'd recommend the el cheapo ikea one if you've not already bought one.
the throwing thing stops, but best not to put more than a couple of bits of food out at a time anyway.
