BLW picnic help

Looking for something interesting to take to a picnic tomorrow for a BLW 28 week old.

Have lots of ingredients in store cupboard but virtually no ideas... has to be something that is v easy to prepare as I wanted to watch The Apprentice (good reason eh!) and also has to be something won't go rank in the heat tomorrow if its not eaten immediately from the fridge. Also would quite like something not bready (or at least not too bready) as I'm trying not to give too much gluten in one day...

yay! you reminded me about the apprentice! for a bub only two weeks in to BLW i'd probably just go for lightly steamed carrot and bits of celery and cucumber. or new potatoes. and oatcakes are yummy too.

i know you're trying to go light on gluten but i always found cold pesto, pasta and peas a great picnic food as you just whack the peas in still frozen and they keep the food chilled while they melt. face it, i always recommend pesto, pasta and peas for eeeeveeerything, it's dd's favourite. oh, and sushi from the supermarket, she likes that as a picanic.

aitch, you are BRILLIANT - for some reason I hadn't even thought about pasta/potatoes. I even have some gluten free pasta...

I'm guessing from what you said re "only 2 weeks in" that I shouldn't have given DD grilled chicken tonight though? (i mean in the sense that "this evening I gave DD..." not that I gave her Chicken Tonight )

god, no. dd was on chicken and big hunks of pork by a few weeks in, it's just that meat is a bit greasy and better kept chilled. i also rather like those mini organic cheese things with the cow on them, can't remember what they're called.

GloriaMumble · 23/05/2007 21:35

see your point aitch!
hope Katie deosn't get fired...

Aitch, does your bubs eat the fish sushi or the veggie one? DD is 10mths, BLWd, but wasn't sure if could have raw fish so avoided so far...

Aitch · 23/05/2007 21:49

yay, katie's in. her flirting was sensational tonight i thought.
she eats the fish and veggie stuff but really it's mostly from marks and sparks for picnics (as they're on the way to the park) so it's moot as they're not raw. she has had a spot of tuna tekka maki in her time and loved it, though but i couldn't speak to the actual safety of it. [bad mother]
perhaps someone else knows the answer?

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 21:51

Umm yeah raw fish contains fish worms, not good my dear....bad mommy.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 21:52

Surely mess is part of the fun though - how about JELLY?

I'd do crudites with dips and also bean salad, my DD loves beans this week.

Aitch · 23/05/2007 21:55

i thougth there was something about tuna being frozen and killing the worms? although i accept that i may have completely imagined that... [head in sand]

chilledmama · 23/05/2007 21:56

I love BLW and so does my DS but he doesn't actually eat any of it! He still doesn't do lumps!! Its very entertaining though, watching him chew and suck everything then spit it out and rub it into the table

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 21:57

God I would hope they didn't freeze the fish first, that would be extremely dangerous as it would disguise if the fish had gone off.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 21:57

Ooh and melon is good too.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 21:58

www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_060.html the fishy worm thing...

GloriaMumble · 23/05/2007 22:09

omg I LOVE Katie!
picnic now off but off into London to visit workmates for lunch... good job I hadn't cooked the pasta yet!

(Mercifully, many Japanese restaurants purchase squid and whatnot frozen. Shrimp, eel, and octopus are often cooked.)

from the straight dope. so what does that mean, then? am i wrong about the freezing making a difference?

whomovedmychocolate · 23/05/2007 22:10

It needs to be frozen for THREE DAYS for it to kill the eggs. Buggered if I know Aitch. All I know if I wouldn't give it to my DD - yet. Although she's scoffed tons of smoked salmon.

Aitch · 23/05/2007 22:16

my understanding is that most fast-food type sushi restaurants use frozen tuna, tbh, so that might have been deep-frozen for months. i remember investigating it when i was pregnant.
