What milk in baby porridge for ebf baby?

This might sounds like a silly question!

My DD is 5.5 months and is loving the fruit purée for tea I've introduced her too. Been thinking I'll start her on some breakfast in a few weeks, but can't think what to give that doesn't involve cow's milk as I don't think they're supposed to have it until they're one are they? Seems odd to buy formula just to put in food.

I cannot be doing with the faff of expressing at this point.

So, what did/do you put in baby porridge for your ebf baby?

Thanks.

I think they can have small amounts of cows milk in foods at 6 months, just not as a drink.

Grandmaswagsbag · 11/06/2018 19:33

Sorry forgot to add that’s what I did for ebf baby.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/06/2018 19:34

Cows milk

Windydayz · 11/06/2018 19:35

You can get baby cereals that just need hot water adding.

GrandmistressGlitch · 11/06/2018 19:36

Grandmasbag of course, thank you! How daft of me. The sleep deprivation has got to me. My DS had gone onto formula by this point, and I used it in cereal up til 1 which has confused me.

Windydayz oh really? Where from please?

They say don’t give cows milk as a drink until 1 as it’s not nutritious enough for them. It’s ok to mix cows milk with food, and cow milk products like cheese and yoghurt are ok too from 6 months.

GrandmistressGlitch · 11/06/2018 19:38

Thank you @CrazyOldBagLady! Good advice all round, thanks all.

They can definitely have normal full fat cows milk in food from 6 months, just not as their main drink. I know someone else said this and you agreed but I wanted to emphasise the point-absolutely no need to buy special baby cereal.

bobstersmum · 11/06/2018 19:39

The cow and Gate ones in a tub you just add hot water, I was in same boat as you op.

TigerDragonMonkey · 11/06/2018 19:40

I think the aptamil porridge already has formula in it and you just mix some boiled water in. Saves buying separate formula :)

GrandmistressGlitch · 11/06/2018 19:41

Thanks @Orangedaisy I live in the sticks and can't get hold of much in the way of special baby stuff. Which is just as well as it is often monstrously overpriced! I'll be whizzing up some normal porridge oats to make baby porridge then Wink

Mine had normal whole rolled oats from about 6 months and seemed to really enjoy it. Didn't need baby oats or anything powdered.

GrandmistressGlitch · 11/06/2018 19:45

@bassackwards good to know thanks, might save me a job too!

My twins weren't so keen on normal porridge so was originally buying the cow and gate porridge.. so pricey! However tried ready brek.. and they love it! Phew!

peodar · 11/06/2018 19:52

Take a look at baby led weaning - no need to buy expensive baby foods just tweak your usual diet

Topsyloulou · 11/06/2018 19:56

For DD's breakfast I use normal oats & mix with either full fat cows milk or almond or soya milk. I then add some fruit purée in as well. She absolutely loves it & cant get enough. We're doing baby led so I make it thick enough that it doesn't fall off the spoon & she takes the spoon to her mouth once I've loaded it.

Mol1628 · 11/06/2018 19:59

Mine had normal oats and normal whole blue cows milk. No need for any ‘baby’ cereal or anything like that.
As others have said, as long as it’s not used as a drink it’s fine.
Mine always had a tommee tipee cup with water with their meals from about 6 months.

AreWeDoingThisNow · 11/06/2018 20:35

DD didn't eat very much porridge when we first tried it so I just used to hand express the three tablespoons needed to mix it.

But as pps have said, you can use full fat cows milk instead, which I did once she ate a bit more.

To start with he preferred toast so she could feed herself. Didn't really take to porridge until she could hold the spoon.
