Too much formula??

I weaned DD from breast to bottle a couple of weeks ago which was a nightmare as she was only taking about 100mls of milk a day at one stage. Well now we have the opposite problem! It's like she's discovered this love of formula! I'm trying to get some sort of feeding routine going as we were breastfeeding on demand before so had no idea how much she was taking.
At the moment it is kind of like this:
5.30-6am wake up (often not hungry due to feed in the night-this is what I want to change)
7am- arrive at nursery
8am- porridge
9.30ish- 120mls bottle
11am- lunch
12.30ish- 120mls bottle
2pm- snack (usually yogurt and pureed fruit)
4pm- home from nursery
4.15-4.30 - 120mls bottle
5.15- dinner (e.g. Pureed pasta/chicken/veg- maybe around 3tbsp)
6.00- 150mls bottle and bed
She then usually wakes around 12-1am for a feed and again around 4-4.30am. I usually for around 120mls at the first feed then the later one try to limit it to 60-90mls but that usually results in her screaming the place down and taking ages to resettle.
She drains almost every bottle we give her but am very conscious of over feeding her. She was born on 55th percentile then went to 85th and has recently dropped back to 65th. Many people commented on her rapid weight gain in first few months and how if she was formula fed it would have been a cause for concern. So am very paranoid about over feeding her.
Can anyone give any tips??

what age is she? How much formula over a 24 hour period?

Thecaravan · 01/06/2018 17:31

Whoops sorry she's 7.5 months. Approx 750mls formula over 24 hours.

I wouldn't limit to 4oz in the day feeds tbh especially if she is draining them. Giving more during the day could make her more likely to sleep longer at night.

I posted similar about 10 month old the other week as I was at my wits end... feed as much as possible in the day, milk or food but food preferably and then limit the bottles at night, I dropped down an ounce at a time and then once I got to 4oz stopped and just settled her back to sleep instead

On the formula box it gives an indication of how many mls they should take over a day. Try and get it in during the day then theoretically she shouldn't wake during the night for it. I tried this with my last DC and it worked. We did it from earlier though, before weaning

Sounds similar to my baby who is 8 months. I give around 7oz though and always offer before the food. Sometimes he drains bottle, other times he will fuss and not want it, so I'll give him a drink of boiled water or very watered down juice. At tea time I will give food before the bottle and it's usually only a 4oz bottle.

He has his bedtime bottle feed between 7 and half past, then I wake and feed him around 10-11 otherwise he wakes in the night.

Like another PP said , if she is draining the bottles then maybe try giving her more. This could stop her waking in the night. As for the weight said I wouldn't worry too Mich is she has dropped down again. Has your health visitor voiced any concerns?

Thecaravan · 02/06/2018 06:32

Thnaks for your responses. Am not UK based so no health visitors. Drs don't seem concerned about her weight at all. Yesterday she took 3oz about 4.30 then had some dinner around 5.15 and took 5oz at 6pm before bed and that seemed to keep her going a bit better. Only one night feed of 5oz at 1.30am.
Will try and increase the amount during the day and hope we start getting full nights sleep! When we first switched to formula she kept vomiting huge amounts in her sleep if she took more than about 4oz which is why we were quite cautious about giving her more. Seems to have got used to it now though.

Good luck

This doesn’t actually sound like too much milk for a 7.5 month old. Milk is still more important than food at this age but as others have said, try and get it in during he day so she doesn’t need it at night.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/06/2018 19:47

20floz or 591 ml is the absolute minimum she should be having at this age OP. I’d try my best to get this into her during the day and she’s draining the bottle Smile
