7 month old poop...how hard should it be?!

Hi

My little one has been on solids just over a month, and is eating really well. However, her poop has gotten really hard recently. She eats mainly fruit and veg, with some other bits like meat, fish and rice. She often poops a few times a day, and a very small, hard amount comes out (I liken it to sheep droppings), and when she goes she really, really strains, and even then sometimes only a small amount comes out. This evening she had been really grouchy, which is unlike her, and then really cried quite a lot when she was going for a poo, so it must have caused her some discomfort (she has been her usual happy self since, so must have been that causing her grouchiness). This poo was quite a bit bigger, but just as hard, which must have been what caused the discomfort.

So I guess my question is, is this normal?! Obviously poo will change after starting solids, but hers just seems so, well, solid! Could she be constipated? And if so, does anyone know of any foods to give her/avoid to help get things moving? I just read somewhere to give brown rice or whole wheat pasta, but I thought these were to be avoided? I did take a picture of the poop this evening so I can take it to the HV, but that is on a Tuesday, so a whole week to wait before I can go and ask them for help.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

My twins were like this when they first started on solids. Within a few weeks they'd sorted it out, I've been offering more water. No idea if it's helped though

I had a similar situation and the HV told me to avoid bananas and eggs for a while. I sort of loosely followed but it sorted itself out anyway and now she has eggs and bananas quite a lot. As pp says - more water maybe

Oh no, she has bananas for breakfast most days, and eggs quite often too!! That might be the cause of the problem then. Thanks so much for both replies; will see if cutting out bananas and eggs, and giving more water does the trick Smile

In addition to the advice already given, plums really got things moving for my DD.

Prunes get my baby's bowels moving a treat. And lots of water.

Masses of fluid; fruit and cereal for breakfast helps eg weetabix or porridge.
It is partly their systems adjusting .
