Rusks

Has anyone tried their little ones on rusks original or reduced sugar? Making them into a purée using some of their milk?

I didn’t use them as I couldn’t see the point really. I was told to start with fruit and veg under 6 months and by 6 months they both wanted proper food anyway. Even the reduced sugar ones have 20g of sugar per 100g so they are roughly a fifth sugar. It’s not an ideal food to give your baby Smile

Hi Op, I didn't use them either, I think historically when I was weaned many years ago they were a firm favourite, but as a poster has said even the reduced ones still have quite a bit of sugar and you don't want your little one to favour sweet things too much, otherwise they will reject potentially savoury flavours later on?

I would try natural porridge oats (nothing else added) warm with milk when cooking and if your little one is 6 months, they can have fresh strawberries and raspberries whole or you could blend and add to the porridge. I tend to slice the strawberries but leave the raspberries as they are and you can spoon feed your little one or offer pre-load spoons, if you are BLW at that point?

It's a great breakfast and you can add different fruits throughout the week. My little one is 8 months and we have porridge oats once or twice a week.

I don’t think they are going to do any harm to your baby! Do what you want. I gave my first rusks mixed with their milk

TeddyIsaHe · 08/05/2018 06:09

Rusks have so much sugar it’s basically giving your baby a custard cream as their first food.

Try fruit purses or veggies. It’s best to start of with as little processed food as possible, you can’t avoid it forever, but while they’re tiny you should try to keep it as natural and fresh as possible.

We used them as breakfast for the twins for a few weeks.

Totally fine.

I've never understood why anyone would wean their baby on sugary biscuits. There's just no need.

flumpybear · 08/05/2018 06:46

We didn't wean our children on these but they did have them in the cupboard, often used them just dry to chew on - tended to use baby porridge, purée foods for weaning

Don't even have babies any more but still buy a box every few months Blush
Mmmm rusks.
I want one now.

strawberrypenguin · 08/05/2018 06:58

I used them. Usually for breakfast mixed with milk and some fruit purée.

Toasttea · 08/05/2018 07:11

I didn’t wean mine on them. I gave her them now and again. People are so quick to judge!!!

Me too! So yummy. Surely I can't be the only one at uni who always has a box Grin

Mummytobabygirl · 08/05/2018 07:47

Thanks everyone, only wanted to know as seen there are so many different things to offer babies and wanted to offer a variety i haven’t yet tried her on them.

My 7 month old has one for breakfast with his milk now and again but prefers Weetabix now.

dementedpixie · 08/05/2018 08:00

Even reduced sugar ones are very sweet. Lots of better things to use
