Baby Rice

Starting to weaning my 6 month old and started with baby rice. She seems to be taking to it well, giving her a little at breakfast and lunch and will soon start to introduce veggies instead at lunch. I’ve heard good and bad things about baby rice, has anyone else started with rice? X

Yes but mine didn't really like it but I ended up mixing a bit in with the veg puree which seemed to work better.

Never used baby rice. Started with veg purees. Dc1 hated being spoon fed so lots of finger food. DC2 more receptive to spoon feeding so mixture of puree and finger food. Also give ready brek and about to try weetabix.

It's a filler with very little nutritional value. Plus it's expensive! I'd just stick to the veg personally.

It has pretty much no nutritional value, but I have found it useful for thickening purees when I've inadvertently made them too thin or to bulk something out a bit.

DD is nearly 1 and I still make use of it from time to time as a quick dessert with fruit if she isn't satisfied after a meal, and to thicken things a bit as she is learning to spoon feed herself so I'm using stodgier textures that stick to the spoon for the moment.

I'd start weaning just with single pureed veg, then gradually mixing the veg, then some pureed fruit.

I tried rice at first but it gave baby really bad tummy ache and v runny nappy. Left it for about a week and tried it again just to make sure it was the rice and not just sick, and he threw it all up so not giving it any more. I've heard that pureed barley is a good alternative and is v healthy so going to try that this week.

I've been mainly giving root veg and he's fine - parsnip, carrot, sweet potato all popular

It's a waste of time.

So are purees. Six month olds don't need them, just start to offer normal porridge or something at breakfast and maybe some soft veg sticks or toast fingers for them to learn how to pick up at other meals.

Why do people keep saying this? Literally this exact quote, repeated over and over as nauseam.

Baby rice is fortified with vitamins, minerals and iron. Iron is extremely important. Fortified cereals are one of the most efficient ways to get iron.

I avoided it. For me weaning (traditional or blw) is to introduce food and baby rice isn’t really food imo. Veg purée or soft veg sticks are food.

every baby is different but my DD hated stuff like that and wanted proper food right from the start. I think we lasted about a week on puree before giving up and just giving her chunks of stuff to suck on.

She does enjoy stronger flavours (chilli/garlic) than I would ever have expected her to enjoy in general though so that will be part of it.

I've only really seen it used to thicken up purees when babies have been weaned before 6 months. After 6 months they can just have normal food.

I didn't use it either but when people say thins that are blatantly untrue that are just parroted from other posters it really irritates me.

I'll be using it next time because I can see the benefit now.

I don't see how rice doesn't count as food? It is literally that - rice. Which billions of people eat, every day. Rice that has been processed and mushed, in the same way that veg gets processed and mushed and fed to babies.

I don’t see it as food because I gave my children food that I would eat, things with flavour and texture. I wouldn’t eat bland runny baby rice.

I started with rice in breastmilk.

I spent a fortnight with blw, and panicked because dd would not pick anything up at all. She just swiped it all onto the floor. She still won't pick up finger foods at 9 months (which is also making me mildly anxious Blush).

So I tried baby rice, which she wolfed down. It got her used to a weaning spoon and from there, I just carried on with trad weaning. She now eats pretty much anything on a spoon. Hmm

I didn't finish the packet though. I've used it since to thicken purees I've made, but still have quite a bit left.

As for the gloop angle, I just thought, well, adults eat all sorts of gloop: rice pudding, milk soups, yoghurt, bechamel sauce...

Just because you wouldn't eat it doesn't mean it's not food! What a weird thing to say. People all over the world eat bland rice every day! I wouldn't eat carrot puree or those disgusting BLW porridge bar things that are all over Pinterest but that doesn't mean they're not food
