Vomiting first week

Hi all,

We've started DS on puréed carrot this week. He is 24 weeks old.

Without fail, he's gagged and then vomited the whole contents of his stomach.

Is this normal? It's awful to watch and results in the purée being thrown away and me having to bf again to make up for what he's just lost.

Is this his body telling us it's too soon?

I did baby led weaning, my ds did this for about 2 weeks, I was getting a bit worried and thinking I might have to change to purees and all of a sudden he just stopped doing it. Still have no idea what all that was about! You could try leaving it 30mins after milk before you ofter food, just so that some of the milk will have been digested. Hopefully it'll just stop happening.

One thing the doctor told me was that when they do this, it looks like a lot more than it actually is. So it can look like exorcist proportions of vom but it’s quite unlikely to be the entire contents of the stomach! There’s also an extreme gag reflex called the tongue thrust reflex which exists to protect them from choking and usually disappears around 4-6 months, perhaps your DS still has this, if he does then it should disappear soon. You could try putting only the tiniest bit of food on the tip of the spoon and putting it just inside his lips, not pushing it all the way into his mouth. And take things very very slowly, just a couple of spoonfuls at a time for now.

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but thank you OP for this post! My son is 6 months (and a few days) and is doing exactly the same thing. I thought he was allergic to everything, as he’s on CMP free milk, but now I see not.

Could you come back and tell us how your little one is getting on now?

fatbottomgirl12 · 13/08/2018 21:33

My DD is 7 months and we have been weaning her for a month now. She often vomits like this. We think its because she is over feeding and her stomach can't hold all the food. I have started feeding her smaller amounts more often. Its very difficult because she is very small and the health visitor would like to see her gaining weight faster. I think this is making me obsessed/paranoid.
I don't know whether I should re feed her after she vomits or just leave her.

@fatbottomgirl12 is there a reason that the HV is concerned about your DDs weight? Has she dropped more than 2 centiles?

Can you give us an outline of what her day looks like for milk and food? I might be able to tweak it for you Smile

fatbottomgirl12 · 19/08/2018 21:12

@JiltedJohnsJulie HV is concerned as LO Birth Mum was addicted to heroin and was using heavily during pregnancy. Her she has always maintained the the same centile which is just above the 2nd. Although she did seem to drop slight when last weighed but she had become much active. Also her head is growing on the 91st Centile so HV thought maybe her body needed to catch up.

She wakes at about 6.30am has 7oz milk goes back to sleep for an hour.
She has porridge at about 9am made with a 2 oz of Milk.
She has a small amount milk about 3-4oz between breakfast and lunch and I she will also have a biscuit or snack.
About 1pm she has lunch whatever we are having mushed up with added butter or olive oil depending on what it is - for example 1/2 a small avocado with a bit of banana, or tea leftover from he night before.
She then as a sleep for a couple of hours.
Wakes and has another 3oz milk.
Depending on timings she may have a small snack (yogurt).
Tea at about 5/6ish again whatever we eat so tonight roast chicken dinner and a pudding ( pot of joy chocolate mouse)
Before bed she will have about 4 oz milk.
Dream feed at about 12am with up 6 oz milk.

What do you think ?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/08/2018 18:32

I think with that amount of formula and solids I’d be concerned that’s her weight is on the 2nd centile tbh. Is she under a Paed and a Paediatric Dietician?

There’s a really useful Adoption Section on MN too if you want to speak to sone other MNers who have more experience than me Smile

fatbottomgirl12 · 20/08/2018 18:51

@jilted She was signed off from Pead care in June. They said that although she was small she was following her own curve so he wasn't concerned. She has plenty of energy and is hitting all her milestones, apart from rolling to her tummy. She hates being on her tummy (heart surgery at 2 weeks).

Its so difficult she looks so tiny Sad . HV is due back on the 27th so we'll see then might asked to be referred. Might pop over to adoption section. Thanks for advice.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/08/2018 07:00

Even without the Heart Surgery, both of mine hated tummy time so I wouldn’t worry too much about that Smile

Is she still vomiting?

fatbottomgirl12 · 21/08/2018 10:07

She hadn't vomited all week until last night. She vomited her bottle before she went to bed, but seemed to keep down her food.
The she woke much earlier than normal for her feed in the morning. Smile.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/08/2018 18:36

It’s good that the vomiting has reduced Smile
