Hi there!
Im looking for some advice and i hope you guys can help! Is it just me or is the whole process of weaning and bubbas diet a complete and utter nightmare!? Advice coming from every which way and no idea what to do for the best for baby and also your own sanity and pre baby routines? Basically my gripe at the moment is how and what to feed my little one and how it fits in around mummy and daddys current diet..So firstly i'll be honest, we do eat veg but not every night and a lot of those evenings we do eat veg its usually salad based or put in something that makes it less healthy... Like sheperds pie or something of the like... I would like to ease baby into a routine of having the same as us. However im constantly worrying that it wont be enough. At the moment bubba is in a fairly good routine of porridge for brekkie, and a veg n meat dinner. Lunches are proving difficult as ive tried various sandwiches, omelettes, pittas n houmous etc and he's sticking his nose up at everything... But thats probably a whole new threads problem.. For example this week on the menu for mummy and daddy is tacos and salad monday, chicken and pasta tuesday, wednesday is pie mash veg, thursday will be a ready meal as i work late- obviously bubba wont be having those!, friday will be cottage pie (but i always add bisto best!) saturday will be spag bol and sunday a roast with all the trimmings! So what about baby?? When he makes the transition to our diet will it be enough? will it be ok that the only nights with greens on the table will be staggered between the pasta dishes and salad etc? Do i get around this by just offering the meat and veg that are his dinners now at lunch time instead? Please help.. Im pulling my hair out as we speak. Smile

I tended to offer the meat and two veg type things twice a day at the same age. Soup is good too (homemade-be aware of salt content of bought). I have adapted what I make for us so for e.g. I now use kallo very low salt stock cubes. If I’m doing something like chilli then I portion some out to cook separately before I add lots of spice. Green veg wise I would just start doing frozen peas/steamed broccoli or something quick to have on the table and you can all have a bit. It’s great you’re all eating together as that will hopefully encourage a varied diet.

Sounds fine to me. If you are worried about veg just get some tinned / frozen veg and you can just cook it quickly to go alongside whatever else you are having.

I just gave mine what we ate. We are by no means veg fiends.

Thank you both, was a relief to read your messages. I barely use salt in my kitchen, i try to get around it with other spices and flavours, if you want salt you add it at the table kinda thing... However I do use gravy quite a bit, although i wont be pouring it on little ones meals like i do for mine and daddys.. i do still use the granuels in my shep/cottage pies or any hotpots im making etc.. We probably have a meal like that once possibly twice a week... would it be awful to give him some? It's all so confusing isnt it? This generation i find are super health concious with their babies when i know the likes of my mum and mum in law would have put lashings on mine and other halfs meat and two veg those many years ago lol. My mum thinks im crazy when i say im avoiding giving bubba this and that because its not good for him... i always get the 'well you survived to tell the tale!"

It'll be fine.

It looks like a lot of salt in one meal with gravy granules, but over the course of a day, a week etc it really isn't much at all.

Ok great, thanks Flisspaps. The name had me cracking up by the way!
I guess sometimes i panic too much but then i suppose a lot of new mums do the exact same thing! I have a friend on facebook that posts stuff all the time about how disgraceful it is to let your little ones have a tiny nibble on a biscotti rather than eat a banana... Sometimes i laugh sometimes i feel soooo guilty! I do also..in the back of my mind...think that as soon as her little one gets to secondary school n given lunch money he's gonna be spending it in macdonalds everyday because the poor mite is gonna think hes missed out on sooo many goodies in his childhood. Whereas fingers crossed mine will see it as an occasional treat that is allowed and not the forbidden but tempting 'screw you mum' meal haha

You could buy reduced salt gravy and stock cubes to ease your worries (this is what I do!)
Tesco do a good range and they're all msg/additive free too.

That would be helpful! Ill check out the shelves! Thank you
