Has anyone started BLW at 24 weeks? 2 weeks of 6 months old?

I started at 6 months but don’t think 2 weeks earlier would have made much difference. I’d intended to do all baby lead, but found my son was happy to eat but didn’t always like actually feeding himself- at first, he didn’t seem to like having sticky hands etc.

In the end, I did a mix. When we got (fairly quickly) up to 3 meals a day, I tried to do at least one meal where he fed himself, one spoon fed and the other as convenient. I also try and mix it up so I don’t always spoon feed the same meal etc. I never really bothered pureeing anything but he did sometimes have pouches so he had a mix of textures from early on.

At 10 months, he’ll eat most things but has days where he’ll barely eat for no apparent reason. He’s equally happy to feed himself or be fed, so the mix has worked well for us.

Yes I did - around this time with both. There is no way 2 weeks can make a difference really! Just go for it if you think baby ready

We were out on Saturday and she was sat on my lap and next thing I know she'd lunged and was gumming my poppadom.

She can sit unsupported for about 15 seconds and sits really well in her highchair, the only milestone she's not reached yet is being 6 months.

I just figured if I cooked some carrot sticks and put them in front of her and she picks them up and eats them then she's ready?

The advice for BLW is that they should be able to sit well unaided - about 15 seconds doesn’t sound like your baby is quite there yet so a couple more weeks may help?

ew1990 · 15/04/2018 22:12

Ahh right I though it was that they could sit in a highchair without slumping and holding their head steady, thank you!

The baby I look after wasn't sitting unaided when she started weaning. I wouldn't say we did pure BLW but she ate a lot of finger foods and fed herself. She could sit well in her high chair though.

I'm thinking of doing a mix, puréed with some fingers foods to just mess about with IYSWIM.

Try some sweet potato, it's very soft and mushy and worked well for us. At 6 months my wee one was holding his head up but not sitting up fully unsupported, he was sturdy in his high chair so I was happy to start. He enjoyed smushing broccoli too and the wee leafy bits would make its way in his mouth sometimes.

We have it a good bash but when he started nursery it kind of went to shit as they spoon fed him everything. He does a mixture but we spoon feed his main meals so I know he's getting enough - he's no longer taking milk throughout the day. He will happily eat chocolate and baby crisps with no fuss tho lol

This is her in the highchair- I sit her in it in the day to get used to.

The reasoning is that they often gag quite a lot with BLW. It’s perfectly normal, but proper control of their core and upper body helps them to be able to dislodge any bits of food themselves, as they can lean forward/move freely etc to cough it out. If they don’t have that level of physical coordination yet then the choking risk is raised slightly, I believe.

lambdroid · 16/04/2018 07:08

For reference, mine was sitting fully unaided when I started, constantly grabbing things to put in his mouth and had been very interested in food for a while.

Ahh thank you @FenellaMaxwellsPony I might leave the baby led for a few weeks then, would hate myself if she choked coz she weren't ready
