Been weaning for 10 days - tummy troubles

I’ve been weaning my baby for the past 10 days. (She is one week away from 6 months).
I’ve been giving porridge or half a banana for breakfast.
Something like pureed carrots or sweet pot for dinner.
And something similar for dinner.
I’ve given her some water from a sippy cup but not loads.
Also been breastfeeding.
Over the past few days she is pushing and pushing, getting distressed and making weird gaspy noises, and then pushing out a little pellet poo. This happened 6 times yesterday, twice already today. She’s now getting a sore little bottom.
Is this normal and any ideas on what I can do to help? Have I caused this?
I’m going to see a HV today as well.
Thanks

Hi OP - what you are describing is very normal. Many babies get constipated at the start of weaning because their digestive system takes time to adjust to processing solid food.

You can give your LO a bit of pear or prune puree or some diluted fresh orange or prune juice. Pears, prunes and citrus fruits are natural laxatives and they often help with with baby constipation.

Tbh I'd cut it down. Start just doing one meal for a few days. Then gradually increase the number of meals and the variety of food

Agree that you're maybe giving too much too quickly. I was told to start and establish breakfast and then add other meals. My DS has constipation too and I tried brown sugar, prune juice, boiled water, you name it. It eventually passed and now his poos are delightful 🙄

Yes I would reduce to 1 meal a day and offer lots of boob - breastmilk is a natural laxative. I stopped and started solids until DS got used to them and was pooing without struggling again. Also prunes and a warm bath tend to get things moving quite quickly if baby is upset / seems uncomfortable.

Oh, have forgotten to mention that banana may actually contribute to constipation. I would try and replace it with other fruit or fruit puree for a few days.

As other posters have said cut down meals - one week of one meal a day, 2nd week have 2 meals. Go slowly and avoid banana for a while yet unless it's in banana pudding which is fine.
Apple puree or carrot is fun (also amazing nappies lol)

Wee one sounds constipated which is normal at start so you can give prune juice or smashed prune to help or if really struggling then Gripe water is excellent for helping gas escape which will happen in weaning plus loosening all the pellets up.

Saw HV visitor today who said same re bananas - to give them a miss. And eggs, although I haven’t given any yet.
I asked if I am doing too much, too soon, and if I should drop back and she said no, stick to 3 meals, vary loads, introduce loads, things like jacket potato beans and cheese etc.
But I agree that maybe I went in too quick. She just seemed so enthusiastic and after 6 months of battling to get her to take a bottle I was so excited for her to be showing positive signs with weaning I went to 3 tries of food a day straight away.
I will scale back a bit. And try some prunes.
She pooed 8 times today - a few of which were really distressing for her (and me!)
