7 month old lunch out ideas

I’m finally getting there with weaning - my LO is eating really well and this week I’m finally reducing her bottles so I feel like things are slowly getting there. I’m generally at home during the day for lunch so will make her a hot meal, however I’m struggling when we’re out and about so end up giving her a banana or something equally as boring- we’re not at the point of eating sandwiches etc so I was looking for some ideas on what I could give her when we’re out of the house? Some places won’t warm food up so I don’t like to take proper meals out, and also I haven’t given her jars so I don’t really want to start that. Any tips??

I'm following with interest on inspiration for anything! My dd is so uninterested in food/milk it's a constant battle she mustn't have much of an appetite & rarely swallows much

But when we go out anywhere I tend to give her bits of what I'm having, yesterday I went for lunch with mum and got a fish cake which came with chips so she had some fish cake and a few chips (when I say some I mean I gave it to her, she licked it and then found interest elsewhere)

^ sometimes I might just go to neros or somewhere similar and just have a coffee and a cake or a toastie so not baby friendly but quick and convenient for meeting friends on their lunch breaks so it’s places like that where I struggle. If I go to a normal cafe I would share toast etc. I really worry about the salt content on food out and about though so prefer to take my own.

What about mashed up banana and avocado? I also made tiny pancakes with grated carrot mixed into the batter in that were great for out and about.

OhHolyJesus · 06/04/2018 09:15

We weaned slightly early so it will depend on the choke reflex but maybe try:
Slightly steamed mini corn and carrot, cucumber, pepper crudités
Fishfingers and sausages - I know there is salt in them but it's protein and my DS only started eating sandwiches around 1yo
Any fruit

We can do soup if sitting at a table but often do picnics in the park so soup not ideal!

At that age, if I was having lunch out I would order something that was suitable to share. Usually a baked potato with cheese! It's no coincidence that my now 4yr old loves potato Grin
I can understand you being anti baby food jars. I was too, but found the Ella's kitchen pouches were so useful.

Bubblysqueak · 06/04/2018 09:19

I used to just give them a little bit of what ever I was eating .

sthitch · 06/04/2018 09:20

Great ideas- thank you!

As for the choke reflex, she’s a nightmare and always has been, she would choke on milk to the point of going blue. She gags with everything, she can gag 10 times or more when she eats which is scary, not choked but I am so anxious of this happening as she’s a total nightmare!

The baby (9 months) I look after eats sandwiches when we are out and about, something like peanut butter or cream cheese plus a banana and some yoghurt. It was quite a messy process when she started weaning but she's getting really efficient at eating them now.

sthitch · 06/04/2018 09:22

I’m not against the pouches as I know they are organic etc - we’re going to Spain next month and I will take some just in case as I know the buffet food at the hotel can be really salty, but just tried to not get into a habit of using them as I don’t want to be lazy and use them all the time when I actually have time to cook at the moment.

I would have given a bit of what I was eating.if you are worrying about choking just take a banana and squash with a fork.

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/04/2018 09:36

At Nero's and Costa they usually have yoghourt or Bircher muesli ... any good?

jacobsgirl · 06/04/2018 09:56

My little one is 7 months also

He likes scrambled egg (well cooked) sometimes I'll give him that or I'll ask for toast at costa etc and cut into fingers

A wee yogurt or something never goes a miss as well

Storminateacup74 · 06/04/2018 10:50

Honestly for convenience when we were out and about my kids had jars or pouches so much easier.

Doje · 06/04/2018 10:56

At 7m it's really just practice anyway. I took sweet potato 'fingers', cooked carrot, quiche, cucumber sticks. I also made little pancakes made from grated apple and milk and flour, and muffins from grated veg, and cheese with my first (had less time with my second...)

Viper84 · 14/04/2018 10:28

I pop a little lunch box together, often with a mixture of things like....

Strawberry
Kiwi
Satsuma
Cucumber
Pepper
Cheese
Baby crisps
Baby wafers
Mango
Melon
Cream cheese sandwiches ( I break these open)

Then I also give her a little of what I'm having if appropriate.

You can also make pastry pinwheels, fritters, pancakes.

Hope this helps 😊

Banana/yoghurt pouch/rice cake.
She's my 3rd though so I'm not stressing about every meal being balanced and organic Grin

LittleBearPad · 14/04/2018 10:30

Mine used to have whatever I had. I picked things which were a bit baby friendly - I think both are obsessed with pasta as a result

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 14/04/2018 10:34

With my first 3 I just cooked and took with me or bought jars/pouches, with DS2 we BLW, so I bought a big portion and shared it. When we lived in Glasgow, before Lewis's was bought by Debenhams, they had a restaurant called The Family Kitchen, which did a fabulous tray of small portions of all different finger foods. DS1 and DD1 loved it.
