What do you give your baby for breakfast?

6.5 month old is slowly accepting food. We're doing purées mainly as she's not interested in finger food but we offer each time. For breakfast I mash some banana for her but would like to expand my repertoire! Any tips? Is she too small for weetabix? As I'm on my own with her at this time I am a little scared of chokey things but feel free to kick me up the bum with this!

Weetabix, oatibix, porridge, ready brek would all be ok

Pickybrow · 03/04/2018 14:38

I started mine on porridge. You don’t need the baby porridge mind as it’s full of sugar.

RatRolyPoly · 03/04/2018 14:39

Weetabix and ReadyBrek are good ones, particularly if you use warm milk for the Weetabix as it makes it softer.

Apparently Weetabix is really good when they get older for teaching chewing, because you can make it less and less mushy as they get more coordinated.

If I've got time on my hands or if DD fed quite soon before breakfast time I'll often give her a crumpet or toast fingers to faff about with too, just for variety and self-feeding practice :)

Low sugar cheerios, weetabix, eggy bread (with a bit of cinnamon) all go down well here. Fruit and plain yoghurt too.

TeddyIsaHe · 03/04/2018 14:42

Porridge is good - just normal stuff made with milk, if you make it a bit thicker they can dunk their hands in and lick off which was always amusing!

Greek yogurt with mashed fruit

Toast fingers with almond butter on for sucking/gumming

Scrambled eggs made with milk, you can cook them quite soft and spoon feed them. Not a choky food at all, so that’s always good. When she’s a bit bigger and self-feeding more confidently you can move on to omelettes with tons of different fillings.

Tiny pancakes go down well here, I make mine in a blender with an egg, a banana, a big handful of oats and a splash of milk, whizz till smooth and then fry in tablespoon blobs. Dd just had them plain or with fruit.

Weetabix is fine, just check the salt/sugar levels but I don’t think there’s much in them.

My DD has only just started eating more than 1 mouthful at breakfast! But we have tried many things:
Porridge
Ready Brek
Eggy bread
Dippy eggs
Yogurt and fruit
Cheerios (soaked in milk first)
Crumpets

GoodJobShesCute · 03/04/2018 15:01

Amazing thanks! I love porridge so if she can just have some of mine before I pour honey on it that'd be fab. Is it ok to use whole milk rather than spending ages expressing?

My HV told me they can have full fat milk on cooking and cereal from 6 months

FartnissEverbeans · 04/04/2018 20:13

Mumsnet tip: avoid Weetabix - use Oatibix instead. Just as convenient, but it doesn't result in the 'Weetabix poo' which is almost impossible to clean off!!

FartnissEverbeans · 04/04/2018 20:14

And yes, use whole milk or bm, your preference Smile

Great thread- some really good ideas. I’ve been using aptamil baby porridge (buying when on offer as it’s so expensive!) my LO loves it - we’re on the berry multigrain one at the moment for 7months+. I tried her on ready brek but she was quite sick on it and this stuff tends to sit better with her. I’m going to try egg bread this weekend!

ChocDollyMixture · 16/04/2018 21:03

This is a good thread, TeddyIsaHe I tried the pancakes you make and my 7month old ate 3! Shock

Making a bigger batch tomorrow and I'll have some too.

ethelfleda · 11/05/2018 12:19

Place marking Smile

DietCokeIsBae · 13/05/2018 15:54

I was literally about to come on here and ask this - pancakes are a fantastic idea! Thanks everyone Wink xx

MollyDaydream · 13/05/2018 15:57

I like the heinz instant baby porridge - expensive but so quick to do.

cedartree12 · 30/05/2018 17:47

Porridge (made with water or baby's usual milk) - I mix in apricot or prune puree
Eggy bread - top with apricot puree
Pancakes with fruit (DS loves pancakes with lemon juice)
Yoghurt with fresh fruit or a fruit puree

JenniferTa · 08/06/2018 12:03

I reccommend porridge as well. I usually add nutrigen vitamixin and/or ferromixin sprinkles to it, cause while porridge does have a lot of fibre it does not have a lot of the vitamins, minerals and iron that babies and toddlers need
