my 8m2w dd eats like a fly some days and others she will eat a fair bit.well, a fair bit for her.some days she just clamps her mouth shut, others she will seem quite keen although im sure for her age she still doesnt eat alot even on a good day.she will have a few mouthfulls and thatll be it.i do a bit of the old blw too, i kind of mix the two.she is the same with that really.some days shell eat a fair bit ie pasta, toast, steamed veg etc etc, others she'll chuck it on the floor.mil looks after dd when im at work so she tends to have purees then.she still drinks alot of milk.formula btw.she still wakes in the night prob once for a milk feed.am i supposed to reduce the milk a little? she loves her milk and i wouldnt even know how to go about it because wont she still be screaming for milk even if im trying to give solids instead? and i thought aswel milk is supposed to be the "main" nourishment until a year? how do i find a happy balance? im getting all neurotic thinking shes going to get an iron deficiency or something...

They're a mean old lot, aren't they? No one answered so I will!

Don't worry - they all 'get it' eventually. ds1 ate like a horse from the word go - ds2 was just like your dd and fussy with it. They're 11 & 13 now and both eat everything in sight. When I look back at how paranoid I was when they were tiny I can smile at myself - but at the time everything was a worry. Just enjoy your dd - she'll be fine

The quick answer to your question is a big Yes! She sounds just like me DD was at that age (although she refused to eat anything from a spoon, so finger food became very inventive). I'd keep up with the milk, if only to stop you worrying whether she's getting enough vitamins / iron etc but don't give it to her just before she's due a meal. My only tip is if you're really worried then you can always give your DD something you know she likes (only a tiny bit) so you know if she doesn't eat it, she's not that hungry. If she looks healthy, she probably is!

Fortyplus...X posts - spent 10 minutes trying to think of the word paranoid to describe my initial approach to feeding my DD so you beat me to it!!!

have you seen the amount of iron in formula? no need to worry about iron deficiency there...

and someone once told me not to add up food but if i was determined to do it then i could only count every three days. it's amazing, dd sometimes eats nothing and then the next day eats loads etc etc. i don't think you've anything to worry about.

fortyplus · 08/05/2007 21:52

ps - by that age they've learned that chucking food on the floor and watching mum cluck around after them is FUN!

You know I was so worried about my dd as she seemed to eat so little but she has just turned 1 and all of a sudden she seems to "get it". So easy to say "don't stress" but I used to but really wish I hadn't.

She also woke in the night for milk until she was about 10 months which I think was habit. I did start watering it down to wean her off the night feed which did work but didn't (and haven't) cut back on milk in the day.
