BLW and bread?

Eveninties · 14/03/2018 21:09

I did blw with my DD and it was brilliant. My DS is now almost 6m and I'm planning to do it again. First time I made EVERYTHING from scratch because I couldn't understand the salt content of things. Made my own bread etc. Just wondering if regular bread is actually fine? And things like weetabix and rice crispies?

We skipped bread and pasta until DS was 1, and are now very glad. Once he tasted bread the veggies were suddenly much less attractive Grin Rice krispies have a lot of sugar in my view.

I give bread to the baby I look after for lunch. For example today I gave her half a toasted pitta cut into fingers and spread with mashed avocado, she sucked off the avocado and probably ate half the bread. A full pitta has 0.2g salt, so she had 0.05g and the NHS recommend no more than 1g for babies under one.

Bread can be quite high in salt so just watch that. But Dd LOVES toast so I don’t mind (it’s also v quick in the morning).

I’d avoid weetabix and rice crispies in favour of porridge, but that’s just my personal preference, there’s nothing wrong with them.

So regular bread can have too much salt? And weetabix is ok? Any other convenience cereals etc that are suitable? Just want to make life as easy as possible in the mornings, always rushing around trying to get older DCs out to school!

I think the majority of parents I know give regular bread. At 6 months I think I was stil just giving fruit and veggies, but from about 8 months my DS had regular brown toast almost every day. Never really thought about the salt content of that TBH.

Others may be able to advise, as I’m quite relaxed and tend to just avoid the obvious high salt processed crap (sausages/pizza/McDonalds). Obviously none of this was an option before 1 so I didn’t really think about the salt. I didn’t give processed cereals until after 1 but he does have Rice Krispies or weetabix every day now (22 months)

Regular bread is fine, you just need to look at the salt content like you do everything that is pre-made and make sure the salt total doesn’t add up to more than 1g a day.

If you’re not using anything else pre-made that day it’s fine, if however you want to give crackers or cheese etc for lunch just keep an eye on salt levels. Babies can eat anything you want, just watch the salt. That’s it!

We do regular bread but just not too much because of the salt. DD adores it though and now picks it over anything else in front of her so although it's great at keeping her quiet, it's frustrating that she already knows bread is delicious!

I’m impressed you made everything from scratch for your first as its never occurred to me!
We give DD wholemeal bread and cereals like ready break and shreddies. I do look at the labels and keep to the ones without extra sugar and salt in it

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 16/03/2018 12:44

I used to give Dd whole grain then realised later they are not recommended under one.

Ready Brek is fine for babies too Smile

Eggy bread is brilliant

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 16/03/2018 16:20

Eggy bread is brilliant I’d forgotten but DD had a phase where she practically lived of eggy bread.
