Weaning with cows milk allergy

Hi,

So my lo is 6 months and just been diagnosed with cows milk allergy. He has a dietitian referral but we’ve been told it’s going to be around 6 weeks until we get an appointment. We’ve been weaning for the past month but I’ve only been feeding him veggies and fruit. So now I’m really stuck because he’s wanting more than just a few spoonfuls of purée at meal times and I’m struggling to know what finger food he can have. Any help or suggestions would be amazing!

Meat, potatoes, pasta, rice, fruits, veg, bread (check ingredients) should all be milk free. There are dairy free spreads you can use as a butter substitute.

Is he breast or formula fed? If formula fed use his formula in the place of milk for cereal/in food. If bf I don't know which milk would be advised (soya, oat?)

The problem with ‘special’ spreads is there lactose free they still have cows milk protein. He’s formula fed but I can’t get him cereals. They say explicitly not suitable for cows milk allergy on the back, even baby rice!

Use porridge or ready brek then. There are dairy free spreads too

Pure and vitalite have dairy free options

Bryonie2017 · 04/03/2018 15:07

My DD has cmpa too.

For breakfast she has holle organic from 6 months rolled oats porridge (amazon) with her special formula and melon puree plus some toast with flora vegan spread.

For lunch today she had chicken and apple puree (annabell karmel) followed by avocado and for dinner it will be lamb casserole followed by pear, peach and blueberry puree.

Were starting reintroducing milk so she also had a biscuit (fingers crossed)

Anything with butter gets replaced by flora dairy free (suitable for vegans and she has had no issues)

Anything with milk is replaced with aptimil pepti 1.

She is 9 1/2 months actual age and 7 adjusted so still mostly purees.

Early weaning favourites were pear, avocado, butternut squash and carrots.

This link may help. My daughter had/s dairy/protein allergy. I used oat milk in her cereals, Roberts bread, flora dairy free butter, there's a big range of dairy free foods in Sainsbury's. Home made from scratch is really the only way forward in a lot of things. She loved the dairy free yoghurts too.

Organix does dairy free baby cereals

Eggs bread is good too for them. My little one was u see weight too due to been sick etc. So the consultant and dietician told me to cry things as much as possible Smile

Most supermarkets have lots of free from ranges , vegetarian and vegan options can also be good choices .

I found it pretty easy to adapt meals
like.
Cottage pie
Spaghetti bolognaise
Roasts
Curries
Fish pie
Sausages mash veg

Nice snacks
Homous, guacamole ,
Aubergine dips with veggies or dairy free crackers / bread sticks

Oatley range is tasty !! And some of the vegan cheeses are great for cooking

Achafi · 04/03/2018 15:15

Hovis best of both has loads of calcium. My ds has that with Morrison's own peanut butter because it's no salt etc. Pure sunflower spread and oatley milk. His breakfasts are blueberry pancakes, cheerios, toast with peanut butter or low sugar jam, eggy bread or scrambled eggs.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 05/03/2018 19:03

Sausage (check it’s DF and cut lengthways to avoid choking) & baked beans.

Hummus and raw veg.

Best of Both toast with smooth nut butter.

Eggy bread.

You can make Yorkshire puddings with altneranative milk so Roast dinners are in. Best of Bisto is DF

You can make Blueberry Pancakes and Porridge Fingers with alternative Milks.

Sandwiches are in. Lidl’s mayo is DF and their ham is but please check the labels Smile

How about tinned sardines on toast? Just make sure you use a long sleeved bib!

SW’s Ocean Pie is DF if you swap the Quark for Pure or Vitalite. Spag Bol is DF too. You’ll be surprised how much they manage to eat with their hands Smile

Have you tried any of the cheese alternatives yet?

Your welcome. My little one didn't show many signs of intolerance/allergy until I weaned her at 5 months old. She was on normal cow and gate before that.

I gave her some baby rice and boom she was terrible. I didn't feed her solids for around 3 weeks again. Then when I did she did exactly the same.

Also she was really poorly when she had broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onion etc. These are all gassy vegetable and she can only just eat them now. Skin peel were hard for her to digest too x

cindersrella · 07/03/2018 09:49

We used to get to between 9-11 at night and she was horrendous! Screaming, bolting around the bed, throwing herself everywhere, sick and then the really runny poo's at night along with bright red raw bums. Plus when she pumped my gosh she stank.

If she has a build up of dairy now (she is 3) I have a few days of her been unsettled x

cindersrella · 07/03/2018 09:55

Sorry I put this onto the wrong feed 🤦🏽‍♀️

theconstantinoplegardener · 07/03/2018 10:00

Avocado is good. It's high in nutrients and energy, and the fatty mouth feel is similar to dairy products such as yogurt and cream cheese (children often grow out of dairy allergy so she may well be able to have these foods in a few years).
