I have a 4 month old baby girl and we have started weaning on puréed foods... I’m just wondering on what’s best to do..... do I feed her a small portion at lunch time then again at dinner or just keep going with the lunch time food until her appetite increases. It’s been a while since I weaned so as much advice as possible would be great....thanks in advance Grin

I'm not sure what you mean. A couple of the organisations linked to in that article say between 4 and 6 months is fine, and may reduce allergies.

Do what you thinks best, trust your own instincts. I have a 17 year old we were told to start weaning at 4 months - I did she's fine, still alive, no allergies, no weight issues, eats a varied and healthy diet - same with her brother and sisters one who is 2 who was also weaned at 4 months.
You know your baby best, not a book or anyone else. Smile

The link that you’ve posted doesn’t really give details of any organisations that recommend Weaning at 4 months.

One of the organisation is the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) that now recommends starting solids between 4 and 6 months. In the past they were also sticking with 6 months similarly to NHS and WHO. Scienceofmom's blog covers this point.

The second organisation is the EU the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies who were asked to opine on whether EU should change to 6 month weaning. Here is the response:

On the basis of present knowledge, the Panel concludes that the introduction of complementary food into the diet of healthy term infants in the EU between the age of 4 and 6 months is safe and does not pose a risk for adverse health effects (both in the short-term, including infections and retarded or excessive weight gain, and possible long-term effects such as allergy and obesity).

Here is some interesting background where the 6 month recommendation came from:

I weaned at 17 weeks. I knew the evidence that early weaning reduces allergies later in life was not conclusive but I decided potential benefits outweigh minor downside (increased risk of minor diarrhoea).

Now to the actual question.

OP - at 4 months, I was giving DD various vegetable purees at lunch time (carrots, sweet potato, etc). The idea was to introduce her to various flavours and make sure she does not have any negative reaction to any of the food. We only had minor problems with butternut squash - it gave her a bit of wind.

At 5 months I introduced dinner and I made an effort to give DD tiny bits of food known to cause allergies (e.g. eggs, whole milk, fish). DD milk intake did not go down - all the solids were on top of formula.

At 6 months we moved to 3 meals a day. DD liked both solids and milk and was eating loads. Her milk intake only started going down at 7-8 months as she began eating more and more solids.
