Cheese Spread?

I know I'm prob going to get lots of posts saying but I was just thinking about it and was unsure whether my ds who's 11 months could have it, and was it any good, or am I just about to feed him utter rubbish?

Pretty processed and likely to be quite high in salt would be my instant reaction.

Cream cheese maybe?

The occassional bit of utter rubbish when there is no alternative to hand is okay in my book. Wouldn't make a habit of cheese spread.

BizzyDint · 27/04/2007 12:31

philadelphia is ok.

WigWamBam · 27/04/2007 12:38

Why not just give him real cheese rather than processed cheese?

PregnantGrrrl · 27/04/2007 14:52

philadelphia type cheese is fine really. or a nice chunk of cheddar is even better.

rachfran · 27/04/2007 15:04

My DD is 23 months. I gave her cheese spread from about 12 months and she loved it. She still enjoys it. I know it isn't great but there are worse things to have and i go for everything in moderation

UpsyDaisy · 27/04/2007 19:10

Thank you....think I might try philli, it's just for sarnies really so the cheese bit doesn't fall out.

Could you mix grated cheese with something so it doesn't fall out? Or just wrap the sandwich well? Toasted cheese is yummy and won't fall out.

Aitchooo · 28/04/2007 00:41

if you butter both sides and then flatten the bread down with your hand it doesn't fall out. or do the cheese pitta 'recipe' on the blog, dd loves them.

nappyaddict · 28/04/2007 01:22

wouldn't make a habit of it personally as it is very processed, even philadelphia has a small amount of crapola added to it.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/04/2007 07:15

You can buy organic cream cheese, which I find is nicer than philly and I'm sure is less processed.

twentypence · 28/04/2007 07:18

Philly has preservative 202, which is on the Greenpeace do not feed to children list.

I get a supermarket own brand that has no preservative, but for an 11 month old I would just toast normal cheese.

hippmummy · 28/04/2007 08:15

I used marscapone cheese - it was the only spreadable cheese i could find with no salt or other additives.

UpsyDaisy · 28/04/2007 09:03

Ok....you've all convinced me .....no Cheese spread....... Cheese on toast it is.......or perhaps the pitta things...off to investigate now....thankyou!

ia mascarpone not quite sweet though. i have it with desserts i can't imagine it on a sarnie.

Aitchooo · 28/04/2007 12:46

i don't think mascarpone is sweet, particularly, nor is it savoury cos there's no salt.

princessmel · 28/04/2007 12:49

I think its fine. Not all the time at every meal but fine as another lunch/snack idea. dd has dairylea/philly aswell as cheddar and other cheeses.

nappyaddict · 28/04/2007 21:13

i think i just convinved myself it was so i could have it instead of ice cream!
