I think i'm doing ok with the weaning, i am doing it slowly and being guided by my baby on how much to give. I have 2 friends who's babies are 2 weeks older than mine and here is what they do...

Friend A; Baby weaned at 4 months straight onto jar food containing meat, fish etc . Birth wieght 6lb 13oz, weight now 18ib 2oz. Is now nearly 7 months old, eats really lumpy food.

Friend B; Baby weaned at 5 months, eats home cooked food but eats very lumpy food and eats 8-9 cubes of pasta in one meal. Birth weight 6lb 3oz, weight now 17lb 10oz and very short baby.

My baby; Started having vegetables at 5 and a half months, went onto meat/fish at 6 months and food is still quite pureed. Birth weight 7lb 9oz, weight now 16lb 3oz.

Friend A & B are really singling me out and making my baby out like she is slow because i don't shove lumpy food and snacks down her throat. They make me feel so bad and like i am doing something really wrong. I aim to start lumpy food when dd is 7 months with is only a couple of weeks away. They are being nasty and i feel like i am being a bad mother. I am not starving my child.

Ooooh I hate women like this! dump them. I found when I had dd I made friends with people who I never would have without the babies. I soon realised this and sorted the sheep from the goats. friends should not make you feel inadequate. You aredoing a grand job!

Do what you feel is right for you and your baby and tell your friends to get a life.

lol princessmel.

I agree, it's crazy.. this competition over tiny babies' milestones when these things mean nothing in later life:

You can really imagine it:

The year 2017. Swanko job interview.

'So Mr/Ms X, you seem to have all the qualifications. But, just before we finish,

At what age were you able to eat lumpy food?

Oh, I see. NINE MONTHS!

Well, I'm afraid we'll have to have a rethink then.'

I mean, come on!

EmilyandLola · 25/04/2007 17:49

tell your friends to poke off, I'm doing BLW where as my sister is doing it "the proper right way" like "normal" parents... pffff!

Her baby is a fat and over fed weeble, mines perfect (naturally)...

booge · 25/04/2007 17:50

Ignore them.

LucyJones · 25/04/2007 17:51

are you sure it's not just them that's hung up on all this though? I mean do they know precisely how much your lo weighs?

BonyM · 25/04/2007 17:51

Do you know, when I read the thread title I thought you were going to say that you were weaning early and your friends were trying to make you wait until 6mths!

Just ignore your friends - you are doing the right thing. Tell them what the official guidelines are.

munz · 25/04/2007 17:53

good god, joey didn't ahve proper lumpy foods till he was 8 months - and then he chocked on the mashed lumps so I went to BLW - smile sweetly say yes no etc but do what you want - your baby your rules remember besides it's not a competition, (sp) to see who's baby does best. it's jsut rude to make out another baby is slow etc babies delevop at differnt stages - I don't like mothers like that.

munz · 25/04/2007 17:56

and this advanced rubbish, my son might be more physically developed than some of his little firends were at that age - but I tell you now they were more cognativly developed than he was - it has worked out well thou as at groups I find that they seem to watch and learn etc from each other anyhow.

sniff · 25/04/2007 17:59

my dd is 11 months old still wont eat lumpy food only started eating a few weeks ago

so let them come and single me out

ignore them

Also, be aware that sometimes we are our own worst enemies when it comes to competitive parenting! It's only now that I'm learning that sometimes mothers just want to boast about their children and it doesn't mean that they're criticising my child. Up until a few months ago, somebody would say 'he's started walking,' and I would hear 'and yours hasn't - is he a bit thick or what?' But they didn't say anything of the kind!!!

I also got into the very bad habit of undermining him when somebody would ocmpliment him. 'Yes, but...' I'd say, and come up with something that he couldn't or wouldn't do! That's crap for even a 7 month old to hear and it's a very hard habit to break - and for me, it all started with DS's weight, because he wasn't as rounded as the other babies.
