Mil fed baby honey

MIL fed baby a Greek yoghurt with honey today. He's 9mo and they're not meant to have honey before 1 year because it can cause botulism. He ate the whole thing and DH said she fed him one the other day too...

I suffer from anxiety and this is really worrying me. Trying not to overreact so any reassurance would be appreciated

No harm no foul.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/12/2017 16:38

I wouldn't worry, if it's in a commercial yoghurt it's probably pasteurized or something.

PotteringAlong · 26/12/2017 16:42

I don’t think any baby has caught botulism for about 20 years.

DoItAgainBob · 26/12/2017 16:43

It's a very rare occurrence so try not to worry. I would have words with MIL though about food safety/appropriateness.

Sorry, I take it back. There have been 6 reported cases in the UK ever. None caused by ingesting honey.

Mxyzptlk · 26/12/2017 16:45

If MiL isn't aware of your worry, just mention it to her.

Eggplanto · 26/12/2017 16:49

Thank you, feel much better now.
Yeah I'll mention it to her, wanted to make sure I calmed down a bit first because my anxiety can make me seem tetchier than I actually am sometimes and she didn't mean him any harm.

I'd never heard of this but it sounded interesting so I had a quick search; World Health Organisation says infant botulism mostly occurs in babies under 6 months old, once over 6 months babies have developed their natural defenses. Also, the probability of botulism spores being in the honey is very low. According to a Guardian article there have only been 6 cases of infant botulism in the UK, and none from honey.

Don't worry! Keep an eye out but really it would be incredibly unlucky if there was any harm done.

Don't even sweat it. Flowers

I'd be a bit worried about (for example) raw honey from someone's garden but a yoghurt will be fine, honestly.

Passmethecrisps · 05/01/2018 10:55

This is interesting. I bought my 6mo dd some wee oat biscuits the other day then worried as they contained honey.

It does seem that the risk is extremely small indeed

mintich · 05/01/2018 11:01

I'm sure it's fine but there's a reason they say not give give honey so make sure MIL doesn't do it again

BoredOnMatLeave · 05/01/2018 11:07

He will be fine. I would probably ask that she doesn't give it again

I thought they said no honey because it's so high in sugar

My DD's first Christmas, 10 weeks old, I realised my DM was feeding her stilton cheese off her finger - dipping her finger in the cheese then letting DD suck it. Next day my DNephew who was 14 at the time did the same to her with angel bloody delight! She's survived...

moita · 05/01/2018 14:17

Groovylass - 10 weeks! My god-daughter was fed Mr Whippy icecream to her by her 5 year old brother at 5 months of age. She's a very healthy 2 year old so no damage done.

It's probably just honey flavouring anyway rather than actual honey.

If it's the Yeo valley ones they are delicious!
