BLW advice needed

I started BLW with DD (almost 8 months) and then gave up because we are avoiding dairy, eggs, fish and tomatoes and I just found it a bit limiting in terms of what I could make that she could actually manage. (I also felt quite pressured to spoon feed because she's not a great sleeper ((I know there's no relationship but when you're knackered you'll do anything)) ).

However, I want to give it another go and wonder if anyone could recommend food ideas based on those limitations. I'm thinking of giving it another go as I'm stressing about spooning in too much mush. I don't want to make her a fatso by forcing her to eat (which if I'm honest it feels like sometimes).

Hi ginger,What about hummous on soft bread or pittas.Soft boiled potatoes ,boiled carrot batons ,boiled beetroot.Grated apple ,cauliflower florets.I mainly give fruit and veg at the moment.Peas and raisins are fun.Kiwi, banana, pear, plums ,mango, melon.Think of the basics, and you can't go that wrong.Apart from allergies of course. You are more limited, but you can still offer lots at this stage.Good luck.

Thanks Redbeki, you shamed me back into BLW on the other thread! You made it sound so easy.

Sweet potato chips are easy and tasty too.

redbeki · 22/04/2007 08:52

sorry Ginger,I just want to spread the word.I only found it easy after a month of persevering.Once you start, you can only go forward-step by step.It is worth it.Don't be stressed by it though.

does she have pincer grip? (i cant remember when that comes already)

JodieG1 · 22/04/2007 09:09

I'm going to be BLW with ds2 when he's old enough and will have to avoid dairy, eggs and wheat until 12 months as we have allergies in the family. I'm going to start on vegetables and take it from there. this was a good link that someone gave me for foods to give when there allergies in the family so I'll use that.

redbeki · 22/04/2007 18:22

My lo is getting pincer grip at 7 1/2 months.I think they get it earlier when they are feeding themselves.

AitchTwoOh · 22/04/2007 19:26

if you go onto www.babyledweaning.com and do a search for the name Moomin, most of her recipes are very allergy-friendly.

gingerninja · 22/04/2007 20:20

Thanks everyone. I've been a bit seduced by all the fancy recipes you can give via a spoon. The way I was doing BLW just seemed boring in terms of food types to offer especially if you follow the allergic weaning information which I've not been due to it's limitiations and my limited imagination. How do you BLW curry? The mess doesn't bear thinking of not to mention the staining!!!

Ginger - i think BLW curry will always be messy!
I have found that BLW is messy anyway!
My DD loves weetabix soaked in milk, so it is really gloopy but can be held in mits, a bit messy but not too bad. Maybe you could try it with BM if you are BFing, or soya milk?
She also loves to eat bread sticks (organic - limited due to salt content).
Will you be feeding meat? If so, DD lurves a nice big chunk of pork chop (the one without bones, whats it called?), she chews on it and gets all the juices and now she has teeth a bit of the meat too!
Sorry not much help, but I got the meat one from the BLW site...
good luck

AitchTwoOh · 22/04/2007 20:35

just make your curry however you normally make it but maybe substitute more perfumey spices like cumin, coriander and cinnamon rather than straight chili. and then add a big splodge of thick yog to the baby's to cool it down. then pull out some meat and veg and if you have rice put the rice into the yog /sauce mix and that will hold it together. although rise is still a pit. dd eats in a vest and bib if we're having something tomatoey or staining.

redbeki · 23/04/2007 12:06

hows the food going ginger?

BizzyDint · 23/04/2007 12:10

if you're doing sloopy things like casseroles, stews, curries, cottage pie etc just keep some of the veg/meat big and hand those bits over. no need to give so much of the sauce iyfswim. so basically what aitch said really!

PavlovtheCat · 23/04/2007 17:16

my DD does not want to eat anything atm, so I put her fruit puree and a spoon on her tray! Straight onto it, BLW styley...she ate a bit, played with the rest, made an awful mess (i can feel you shuddering as I say it Ginger!!) but no tears!

MaeWest · 23/04/2007 17:23

ginger - I know what you mean about the food/sleep thing. Had such a bad night last night that I almost started a thread entitled 'Just tell me that filling my baby up with formula and purees will definitely make him sleep and I'll do it'. I also feel like a bit of an oddity round where I live due to my lentil weavery tendencies

gingerninja · 24/04/2007 09:59

Well, she's not eating a great deal at the mo although had some porridge this morning which was spooned in but at her demand ie if she opens her mouth. Don't know if that constitutes BLW but I tried slopping it in front of her and, well, I'd rather not. And I've tried the porridge pancakes which were dismal. I'm sure it was my 'cooking' rather than the recipe. Anyway, I digress. I've relaxed a bit and yesterday she ate* a loada lovely veggies, piece of chicken, half a pear, bit of oatcake, slice of toast. I didn't feel half as stressed and she was happy. (Her nappy smelled of asparagus tho!)

*ate = plucked, sucked and chucked.
