10 month old struggling with weaning?

Hi all, any advice greatly appreciated!

I have a 10 month old who started weaning at 6 months as recommended, though felt at 5 months he was ready. He has been slow to wean, started with baby rice etc and at 10 months I’m only just managing puréed food with some lumps.. in the last week he is almost refusing any savoury I give him.. fruit pots and yoghurts go down easily but basically anything lumpy or savoury tasting seems tricky for him. When I have been introducing new foods he still often gags and is sick. I’ve taken to offering finger foods but they are the only thing i give him that he won’t put in his mouth! He will take a bit if I offer it on a spoon but only minuscule amounts. Has anyone else had a baby like this at this age? When the health visitor says I should try smoked haddock I can’t help but feel she doesn’t understand! He has also gone off his milk a little which is worrying me leaving a couple of oz after every feed. I feel like everyone else’s babies are on boiled eggs and soldiers and I’m struggling to get slightly lumpy savoury into him. It doesn’t feel right giving him sweet things only if he won’t take the savoury but maybe I should, some friends have suggested feeding him whatever he will eat! Again any advice for someone who has had similar experiences and come out the other end... feeling low.

I don't have experience of this but I would say relax and move at baby's pace. So what if other babies are eating soldiers. That's not where your little one is at. He'll get there, don't worry, he won't be eating purée for ever.
I've heard the slogan "food under one is only for fun" , he'll be getting his calories and nutrients from milk still

Hi OP, I don’t have experience of this, maybe you could try posting in Parenting or Behaviour & Development? This section of MN is pretty quiet.

I completely understand! My first DD was exactly the same and at one point I felt as though she wasn't having any milk or food. Now I have my DS as well and I am a bit more relaxed on the whole weaning thing, just go with the flow with whatever they are willing to eat and try some small spoonfuls of new foods as and when you feel like it. It can take them a while to 'trust' a food and start to accept it. With my DS now, he refuses new foods all the time but I am also giving him baby cereal morning and evening (I give Nestle Cerelac), he loves it and I know he's getting nutrients and vitamins even when I feel he isn't taking as much milk and foods. In between that I try him on new foods and if he refuses, I don't find myself as stressed! Good luck and try not too much. Ps. my 2 year old DD is now going through another picky stage, you will find it goes in waves of loving foods then refusing them :)

Thank you for the replies, it’s good to know I’m not the only one. Unfortunately he is a little ill at the moment so feeding is not really normal right now but hopefully when he is a little better we can pick up again and just take it at his pace Smile

Will he take sweet finger foods until he gets the hang of it? Rusks are like the devil's food on this board but they were one of DS's first finger foods - very little chance of choking as they melt so easily.

I think it was around 10mo that DS developed a real preference for sweet and carby foods so maybe your DS is doing the same thing.

Also DS never got on with lumpy purées, he hated them! We mixed smooth ones with finger foods (and he only wanted sweet purées)
