6 1/2 months, BLW - worried about it all help!

Lola is 6 and a 1/2 months, and I am really keen on BLW as tried spoon feeding puree, and frankly, was horrible time ... so scrapped it and waited for Lola to want to eat,
so far she'll eat the following, but Im worried that she's not getting much proper food as she still wants her normal amount of bottles,

yesterday for brekkie she ate half a grown up yoghart, half piece of wholemeal bread with philly, 2 sticks of chedder, and then drank 9oz of milk!

She had lunch too, but still had in total of 5 bottles, and wakes in the night...

all i seem to do it feed and make food, help me

Probably a growth spurt? Be careful of wholemeal though - I think it makes them feel full, but they actually aren't, so don't get enough to eat. I think that's right, only read something the other day about it.

Emzickletodoitallagainsoon · 18/04/2007 09:33

oh right, never knew that

Is bread ok to give them, she loves it - munches on the end of a french stick whilst we shop round tesco!

Whats the best bread to give then?

Actually Ive just checked its brown oat bread?

What she ate sounds great to me! Milk's the most important thing atm and will be satisfying her hunger. Just keep offering food along with usual milk and RELAX! She will get what she needs

Hi

I went through a crisis of confidence a couple of weeks ago so I know how you feel. What your DD is eating sounds great to me..my DS loves all that stuff too, but he wouldn't actually eat as much of it as your DD and he's a month older.

I have found that wholemeal bread is too heavy for DS and gives him wind, so we stick to pittas and white bread.

Emzickletodoitallagainsoon · 18/04/2007 10:07

oh pittas, thats a great idea, i hadnt thought of that

what else are you feeding your LO's, she seems to constantly want to be feeding herself some thing, and cheese is a bit boring now, she feeds the dog!

hi there emzie. remember that the baby wanting her bottles is completely right for her at the moment, what dd did was keep level on her bottles for ages while her appetite for solids went up. cut up grapes, banana, steamed carrots and bits of celery or cucumber are also good at this stage. and ginormous hunks of pork, if my dd was anything to go by. have a look at the blog at www.babyledweaning.com and you'll see the kinds of things i was giving dd when we started off.

NineUnlikelyTales · 18/04/2007 13:22

Other things we have been giving DS are:

Penne pasta pieces (sometimes with sauce if we have had one that is OK for him to eat)
Rice cakes
Kiwi fruit chunks - probably his favourite fruit so far
Celery dipped in cream cheese
Potato wedges (sweet and normal potatoes)
Peas..was amazed he can pick them up, but he does and he likes them!

We also give him a loaded spoon with mushy stuff like mashed potatoes or yoghurt, and he feeds himself.

Emzickletodoitallagainsoon · 18/04/2007 15:26

just gave her philly pasta for lunch and she chucked it all on the floor, she only ate two bits of grated cheese... what am I doing wrong?

Nothing, honest! Some days my DS barely eats a thing, other days he wolfs down loads. They don't really need the nutrition from it at this age, that comes form the milk, so don't fret.

redbeki · 18/04/2007 18:13

my lo(71/2 months) had boiled beetroot yesterday, and loved it! it was really soft. She then rubbed it all over her face, and in her hair, what a sight .
Sounds like you are doing the right thing Emz,just carry on.

NineUnlikelyTales · 18/04/2007 18:52

I love that image redbeki

I hope you had the Persil on standby!

redbeki · 18/04/2007 18:57

I just stuck her straight in the bath!

olivo · 18/04/2007 20:59

emzickle - my dd is nearly 8 months, has been blw for about 5 weeks and still has about 28-30 oz of milk a day/ night. only in the last few days has the food i give her actually been swallowed more than mushed around and now i am thinking i'll cut her milk a little. i was worreid ,like you, but had to be patient!! she got it eventually and now the constant eating and drinking is getting better!
good luck!

Cazee · 18/04/2007 21:50

The problem with giving white bread is when do you swap to wholemeal? Once thay have a taste for it it is difficult to adapt. Might be better to just give less bread, and stick to wholemeal.

Emzickletodoitallagainsoon · 18/04/2007 22:14

well she seems to like bread in any form, and bread sticks, esp when they have humous on them...

MrsWottinger · 18/04/2007 23:47

you'e not doing anythign wrong at all. remember you only have to start stressing about whether they're eating or not when they get to the age of one, so you've both got a good few months before you need ask questions like that. for the record, though, dd never managed to eat grated cheese. she liked hers in thinnish slices. have you tried pasta and pesto, my dd would live on that. add a swirl of philly as well but keep it liquidy.

Emzickletodoitallagainsoon · 19/04/2007 08:03

is she allowed pesto? it contains pine nuts doesn't it?

OP posts:
BizzyDint · 19/04/2007 10:01

pine nuts are seeds. some atopic families are well advised to avoid them. it's upto the mum if she 'allows' it. my dd has been having pesto from 8 months.

deaconblue · 19/04/2007 10:08

That sounds fine to me. It 's good that she still wants her milk. I only cut ds' milk to 4 bottles when he was 9 months, and have only just gone down to 3 a few weeks ago (he's 1 tomorrow). He eats 3 decent meals a day and dried fruit type snacks as well.

deaconblue · 19/04/2007 10:10

ds has the best of both bread which is like white bread but has some whole grain in it (I think???). Maybe try that?
