Weaning

Find weaning advice from other Mumsnetters on our Weaning forum. Use our child development calendar for more information.

It's not rocket science - "it may cause harm to wean early, it does no harm to leave it till 6m" - WHY do people still want to shovel baby rice in at 12 weeks (or earlier)?

I have come up with some ideas as to why people wean early:

they have competitive baby syndrome and are annoyed someone else's baby rolled first, so they want to get theirs onto steak and chips via baby rice and one fruit or veg a week for months

Well, an idea. Any more?

Where should statistics come from if not research???

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:23

I think that she has made a vile commnent that I didn't deserve.

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:23

SEA, love the pic

Kamikayzed, yep, would LOVE baby food not to be allowed to be advertised for babies under 6m. Especially stuff with egg, gluten and dairy in.

NoBiggy · 08/04/2007 00:23

I thought it was fair enough, actually.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 00:23

oooh look cross posts
I think hunker, aitch, vvv, nally and me are just poisting the same thing and at least four of us can go to bed without any noticeable difference to this thread

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 00:24

seems to me that it was a piece of black humour intended to get you to acknowledge harpsi's posts. the ones you were ignoring because they make a nonsense of your position.

CAM · 08/04/2007 00:24

vvv and hunker you have excelled yourselves in your offensiveness on this thread

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:24

How was it vile? Seriously? I don't get it. I wasn't actually going to impregnate you - but you weren't reading other people's posts about why there might not be the pat answers you wanted and asked for several times (and then started to get shruggy about not getting).

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 00:25

and nobiggy and danae, harpsi.

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:25

FFS You are all saying there are risks!!! I simply asked how big the risk was. I don't know if ther's been any research or not . Stop putting words in my mouth!!!!

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:25

Thanks, Cam - if I gave a stuff what you thought I might have winced then.

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:25

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/04/2007 00:25

[proud]

Harpsi, I blardy love you

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 00:26

yes, and no biggy and danae
zookeeper, alright there is a 0.5% increased risk of Crihns if you wean before 6 months.
rising to 2% before 4 months.
happy now?

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:27

(soundproof box)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/04/2007 00:27

Zookeeper, with all due respect - please do go have a look at the thread that was linked further down. You will find many many answers on there

Haleeluia!! Someone knows something! Thanks

hunkermunker · 08/04/2007 00:28

I'm sorry I struck your hypothetical potential baby down with an increased risk of a disease, ZK.

nallyschocolateorange · 08/04/2007 00:28

lol

NoBiggy · 08/04/2007 00:28

Looks like science though.

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 00:28

well anecdotal evidence never did me any harm, harpsi.

zookeeper · 08/04/2007 00:28

Why are you being such bitches?

singersgirl · 08/04/2007 00:29

Yes, but 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago many of us and many of our parents were weaned before 6 months. Decades ago, it was normal to feed babies cereal from a few weeks old.

I'm not disputing the rise in allergies and intolerances, nor am I suggesting that we willingly subject our children to risks. But it is very difficult to isolate weaning as the single cause as against higher CO2 levels, greater home hygiene, vaccination, lack of early childhood infection, increased use of insecticides and chemical build-ups, additives in food, pollution, microwaves, TV watching etc.

Anyway, mine are long past weaning, and I'm off to bed .

MrsApron · 08/04/2007 00:29

Nice thread.

It is competitive baby syndrome combined with well meaning relative syndrome or less well meaning relatvie syndrome who are desperate for mums to bf less so they can feed the baby.

Was horrified when dd2 at about 5.5 months(had been sitting steady for long periods for about two weeks) decided to wrench my bagel (wheat arrgh) with butter (dairy arrgh) out of my hand on the way to my mouth then devour it.

I tried to not feed her anything else but she screamed the place down and developed goalie like skills of interception when anyone else was eating so I gave in and gave her food whenever we are eating. She promptly dropped her third nap in favour of a meal. DD1 barely ate a thing until 14 months complete contrast.

So i do think all babies are different

by about 3 weeks maximum for weaning.
