new to blw. great getting ideas for meals off this section. dd is 9 mths - can they really eat peas at this age (safely)? my mum would be horrified at the thought.

yes! and raisins too !

once they have the pincer grip, peas are hilariously eaten ! have to confess, many passed through whole, but certainly safely !

BizzyDint · 07/04/2007 19:56

yes! they love them. they will spend hours trying to pick up each and every last one.

dcb · 07/04/2007 20:00

thanks - another (daft) ques - i'm just putting food straight onto (clean) table cloth (vinyl) - is this how you do blw or do you use bowls etc? she sits at the table with her high chair.

only just started using cutlery and bowls etc, d's 10 months. before this she would have just picked up a bowl and tried to eat it so no point.

fibernie · 07/04/2007 20:03

Ah yes, peas... one wonders at the nutritional value since they go straight through! Great fun though, I've got a lovely piece of video of mine eating them.

lulumama · 07/04/2007 20:03

i used the high chair tray as her table, then around 12 months, started to offer a bowl of food, or plate, then introduced cutlery shortly after....

BizzyDint · 07/04/2007 20:04

dd like to 'pop' peas between her gums. loves it. also they're nice if you add them to mashed potato..gives you green mash. lovely! and yes, you do just dollop the mash infront of them and let them do their worst.

terramum · 07/04/2007 20:17

Yep - once they have mastered the pincer grip (thumb & finger) rather than just grabbing things with their whole fist...peas, raisins, blueberries, grains of rice...anything goes

We used a mixture of bowls & plates and the highchair tray at first...leaning towards the tray on its own later on as he started throwing the plate as well as the food around ...hes now 2yrs9months & uses the same crockery as us.

redbeki · 07/04/2007 20:58

my dd is 7 months, and I have to put food on her tray,as she prefers to chew on bowl if food is in one. It's too much of a distracting play thing at this stage!

Nip · 07/04/2007 20:59

my DS loves peas and will pick each any everyone up - however putting food in a bowl has been somewhat disasterous for us at the moment, because the bowl and food gets thrown across the kitchen...but it is quite funny though!

claireybee · 07/04/2007 22:33

god yes, my dd probably eats more peas than anything else at the moment!

TwinklemEGGan · 07/04/2007 22:44

Bizzy - so they do eventually stop trying to grab and eat the bowl then? Thank god for that - DS is driving me mad!

Lact8 · 07/04/2007 22:52

Dd got to grips (har har!) with peas straightaway.

A great way to keep her amused while we eat our food.

I try and do dry food at lunchtime and save the messy food for tea. I strip her down to her vest and use the tray on the highchair as her plate/table.

Kids had veggie pasta in a tomato sauce tonight. DD loved it but was orange by the time she'd finished. In her little white vest and with her orange face, neck, arms and knees she looked like a oompa lumpa from the old charlie and the chocolate factory!

dcb · 08/04/2007 10:11

why are all vests white/light colours? would love to buy some brown/orange/red ones as this seems to be the colour of most of her food.....

babyapron can eat peas and sweetcorn at 7months with no pincer grip.(and has been for two weeks)

a complex manouever to get it on top of her hand from a fist and in the go, tis fascinating. and I am so impressed i am posting this whenever it even vaguely fits .

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 11:35

so true, dcb...

and remember that frozen peas are great for teething. i started off with the wee ones, though, before i was convinced.

WriggleJiggle · 08/04/2007 21:42

Like BabyApron, dd was eating peas and sweetcorn way before she got her pincer grip. She loves them.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/04/2007 21:43

Give them mushy peas

AitchTwoOh · 08/04/2007 21:51

WRIGGLE!!! i Must Have another photo of LittleWriggle for the blog. she is soooo one of my favourite babies. and babybear loves that photo too, for some reason.

Realise I'm massively reviving a dead thread here... But in terms of peas (and also sweetcorn etc) for weaning, solid starts recommends mashing the peas until 12 months old - so can they really not have whole peas in food until that age? Is it a choking risk? Thanks
