10 month old reluctant to eat fruit and veg as finger food

I wonder if anyone has any tips for dealing with 10 month ds. He seems really reluctant to eat furit and veg as finger food. He will happily eat a whole bannana and take a couple of bites from a peice of apple, but if you offer him something like kiwi fruit or pineapple he tends to bash it about and throw it on the floor. However, if i break tiny pieces of and feed it to him he is quite happy to eat it if he is hungry. He will happily eat fresh furit grated or chopped in yoghurt. The reason i am concerned is that i would like him to appreciate food in its natural state rather than being hidden. I am wondering whether it is the texture and the fact that such fruit is a bit slippery that he is having trouble with and he will grow out of this if i just keep offering it to him.

perhaps the taste of some foods is a bit strong if unmitigated by yoghurt etc?

hebetalbot · 07/04/2007 15:24

so shall i just keep going with a mixture of yohurt and offering bits of fruit at the end of a meal?

I would just keep offering them occasionally...DS totally hated banana at first - didnt like touching it & pulled a face like he was sucking on a lemon when he tasted it....then suddenly a few months later he took a piece that I offered him...he now eats at least 1 banana a day ....he has also refused pretty much everything tomato related & Im inclined to leave him....Im assuming he absolutely hates it or has a sentivity to it (some babies will instinctively refuse things they are allergic/sensitive to) so dont want to push him into eating it...I think it does take some babies a bit of time to get used to new foods as well....Ive heard that they need something like 14 tastes before they accept it.

thanks for the advice. I think i will ease off a bit and just introduce things a bit more gradually.

just spotted this - my 10mo is exactly the same!!! i'm hoping he'll grow out of it as he doesn't object to having it fed to him just doesn't want to touch it

he does love dried fruit tho so i think its just a texture thing

Mum2FunkyDude · 10/04/2007 13:33

It is just their way of getting to know new food, how it feels, bounces, tastes etc. Ds is 16 months and still occasionally chuck unknown foods about.

AitchTwoOh · 10/04/2007 14:02

i also think that at about 10 months dd stopped saying 'oooh, what's this interesting new thing?' and started expressing a preference. to be fair, i'd screw up my face if you offered me a kiwi fruit. agree with all the other advice, and it was at about 10 months, as i recall, that we discovered the bliss of frozen peas...

redbeki · 12/04/2007 21:10

persevere,he will get the hang of slippery fruit, quite quickly .It is tricky at first,he needs to learn how to do it.

redbeki · 12/04/2007 21:12

my 7 month old dd had peas today, and managed ok with them,a few went in .She was quite fascinated by them .

redbeki · 12/04/2007 21:15

me,again! broccoli florets ,she loved to feel the tops with her fingers, and studied them really closely before she put them in her mouth. When babies have mush at this age,how can they enjoy the same food experience? They can't basically. It's very interesting for them.

AitchTwoOh · 13/04/2007 00:15

you are cracking me up, redbeki, i'm thrilled that you are enjoying BLW so much. it's such fun when you can see it working, isn't it?

deaconblue · 13/04/2007 20:49

Ds is exactly the same. Loves fruit puree, particularly mango, but won't touch a piece of mango. He also loves dried fruit. I've been putting a little bit of fresh fruit on his tray every day and gradually he's being more adventurous - ate a few blueberries yesterday and a raspberry today. For some reason roasted veg is a winner when steamed is chucked over the side of the highchair. Be patient, he'll get into fruit and veg in the end if you keep offering it.

LittleMan · 13/04/2007 21:30

Hi All
Ds is 10.5 months and I have similar issues, he will now only eat fruit when mixed with yoghurt, baby rice, custard, rice pudding etc even though used to eat it pureed etc. Am just persevering with bits of fruit, he actually touched and sucked half a grape today - that's progress from the turned up nose we usually get! It really seems he just does not like the texture of fruit at all! Had me a bit worried but now I have seen this thread it seems it is fairly common so thank you hebetalot for posting it!

My 10 month old will put all finger foods i place in front of him in his mouth but he just sucks everything and then spits it out. or else he just picks it up and throws it on the floor. I have to spoon feed him everything for him to actually swallow anything.

any tips on showing him he should swallow the finger foods rather than just sucking and then spitting out? the stuff i spoon feed him is pretty lumpy (pastas, stews, roughly mashed banana...)...

OneLittleBabyTerror · 25/06/2012 15:29

You can't show him. He has to figure it out himself. Just like crawling, cruising or walking. It's simply by failing and trying again they learn.

omri · 25/06/2012 22:27

ok thanks! hopefully he'll figure it out soon and i wont have to clean the floor around his high chair 3 times a day!

Inadeeptrance · 02/07/2012 12:41

I've found that chopping into baby bite sized pieces has helped my LO, he is willing to try more things when he can just pop it straight into his mouth. He's not so keen when he has to do it himself.
