i work 5 days a week 2 until 8 and i would love to try more blw as dd isnt too keen on purees.thing is i barely have time to sort out all her stuff, baths etc and getting myself ready for work that i simply dont have time to be making things from scatch in the mornings.basically what im getting at is what blw things can you prepare beforehand and stick in the fridge/freezer etc? if any?

What do you eat? Eat things she can have some of and you don't have to do extra special stuff.

wakeywakey · 05/04/2007 11:25

thats the thing though i dont eat in the morning at all normally, i just grab a sarnie when i get to work...

What are you feeding her atm?

Try to eat with her - even if you just have a slice of toast and a banana for breakfast.

wakeywakey · 05/04/2007 11:32

she has some baby cereal in the morning, some fruit late morning and some veg for lunch and thats it, i live in spain and they say no gluten until 8 months etc and i have decided now she def needs more variety and im panicking that she isnt getting enough solids

well don't panic about that... so long as you're not cutting back milk she'll be fine. i used to make porridge pancakes the night before, and things like lentil and cheese wedges and chickpea burgers can be frozen. also my friend pre-steams her veggies and then just pours boiling water on them when she takes them out of the frodge. she mentions this in the allergies essay on the www.babyledweaning.com blog. have a look at the other recipes too, lots of fritters and chicken nuggets that can be made in advance. (although there's no subsitite for food directly off mummy's plate, i find. )

How old is she?

How about steaming the veg in the evening then it's ther cold and nice for her gums the next day.

How about strips of fish coated in crushed cornflakes, so like little home made fish fingers? These freeze well and can be cooked in 6 mins.

make up little meatballs at weekend and freeze them and make your own tom and cheese sauce that again you can freeze in ice cube tray then serve up next dsay with bit of penne pasta?

You an make her grated carrot and cream cheese sarnies.

Keep things like avacado in fridge and lots of fruit and veg in the house.

You could roast veg and then freeze it in portions?

wakeywakey · 05/04/2007 20:59

she is 7 and a half months nearly....thanks for the ideas..ive tried a few things now.she seems to really like her veg puree, doesnt really like fruit and i have started to try blw but she tends to spread or throw 99% of it about,so dont know if this is normal?? also someone said theres no need for special baby cereal now that she can have weetabix or porridge etc, are these then made with her formula? when is cows milk ok?

it's not uncommon for them to smear food about in teh beginning. are you still feeding purees as well?

LittleEasterLapin · 05/04/2007 21:04

I used to steam double quantities and give DS the second half the next meal (or day), but having picked up the "steam/freeze/refresh" top from Aitch's blog, we do that a lot now.

I also make huge batches of little meatballs and freeze them in bags of 5/5, they take next to no time to defrost. Also very small ravioli, which heat up in boiled water very quickly.

AitchTwoOh · 05/04/2007 21:17

say for example tonight, dd had some leftover chicken korma from a meal i'd cooked last week and a baked potato from the microwave and some frozen peas. done in 3 mins.

fibernie · 05/04/2007 21:18

Most of the stuff I've fed my DD has been either out of the freezer the night before or flung together in less than 20minutes! I don't have time for anything more complicated than that... Some regular offerings from my household:
Things that freeze well
Savoury muffins - current favourite is cheese and carrot with a cherry tomato baked in the middle.
Lentil patties
Pancakes/dropped scones with savoury or sweet fillings (they freeze really well)
Meatballs
Potato scones (you can make your own but I will admit I never do)
Salmon fillets cut in thirds and frozen can be cooked in the microwave and are easy to pick up in flakes.
Frozen peas - always go down well with whatever savoury comes to hand. Same with all other frozen veg.
Home made veggie nuggets (very lovely for mum to pick at)
cooked polenta with cheese stirred in cut into wedges to defrost and fry in a bit of butter/oil.
Fishcakes (I make with mashed potato, sweet potato/carrots or whatever root veg I have to hand)
Frozen spinach chunks - really good for stirring into stuff.

Cupboard Stuff
Pasta (corn stuff as well as wheat). Fresh tortellini also good.
Gnocci (get it in pasta aisle, cooks in 2mins)
Potatoes for baking and cutting into chunks
Toast
Baked beans
Eggs - omelettes can be whipped up in no time
Cheese for chunks
Pesto - lots of different types
Breakfast - apricot or raisin wheats, cheerios (can get sugar free but not sure where)
Out of ideas now, hope these are useful!

oh, and cows' milk is fine on cereal from 6mo so long as no allergies etc, but you can use water, ebm or formula if you like

fibernie · 05/04/2007 21:21

Should also have said it becomes second nature when you get used to it. Lots of stuff we eat gets put aside for her the next day. Last night's savoury mince dish was stirred into pasta for her this evening. If we're having potatoes, I save some and put them in a spanish omelette etc etc.
There is no reason to slave over a hot stove.... can't remember who said it, but life is way too short to stuff a mushroom!

AitchTwoOh · 05/04/2007 21:29

it was shirley conran, fibernie. you don't want to email me the recipe for the veggie nuggets, do you? i'd love to put it on the blog. aitch at babyledweaning dot com, i'd be grateful.

Busybean · 05/04/2007 21:31

We blw on breadsticks, ricecakes, toast, sticks of veg eg red pepper/carrot etc go with the flow, thats what blw is all about, stop worrying baout preparing food!

LittleEasterLapin · 05/04/2007 21:32

Gnocci with philadelphia cheese and peas is a staple in our house... DS is now a pea-a-holic (he's on Aitch's blog eating peas on toast )

fibernie · 05/04/2007 21:35

Will just dig it out, it's on paper somewhere, not like me, I can only cope with stuff on webpages normally!
coming up

fibernie · 05/04/2007 21:40

Veg nuggets winging their way to you Aitch, very happy to have something on the blog again - last time was the finger food patties!

AitchTwoOh · 05/04/2007 21:44
