Formula and food for ten month old?

babygirl2016 · 15/09/2017 19:24

I know that the recommended amount is at least 20 oz formula to which my lo has but she has started having a 7 or 8 oz bottle in the afternoon but then like tonight she has then only had 5 oz before bed.
Will this affect her night time sleeping? She used to have a 9 oz bottle before bed.
I'm confused because she usually has 3 bottles a day but yesterday she would only have her morning and night time bottle and had 9 oz before bed but still woke up in the night.
Should I just be giving her two bottles now instead?
Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated :)

Both mine were in 2 feeds at that age. You can make up the rest of the intake through food

Mine was on 2 bottles too, breakfast and bedtime, 7oz AM and 6oz PM

I'm just struggling because she is refusing her breakfast at the minute too so she is not eating much. When she refused her afternoon bottle yesterday I wouldn't mind if she was eating well but she didn't have much for tea either but I don't get it because today she downed nearly 8 oz for her afternoon bottle. I have tried to offer cereal or porridge first but she just won't have it and the most milk she will have in the morning is 6 oz at a push and that is when she has been awake for an hour too so it's not like I'm giving it her straight away so I just feel at a loose end and don't know how to tweak it. I feel useless like I should know what to do as she's ten months old :(

DS is 11mo (just). Some days he eats loads, some days I feel like he's barely eaten anything. If your DD is hungry I'm sure she'll let you know.

I wouldn't worry too much about 20oz per day. That's an average so it probably evens out over the course of a week, but even if it doesn't it's not a big deal. She'll take what she needs.

For reference, DS had 8oz this morning at nursery and about 6oz before bed. That's pretty normal for him.

Oh, and I meant to say - she's probably about the right age to drop down to two bottles. I've always found that DS sleeps better if he's eaten enough over the course of the day, rather than just before bed. Sometimes I top him up at about 10pm if I think he might need it.

You're doing fine!

Between 10 and 11 months my dd pretty much abandoned all milk (she was bf)except her bedtime feed. Hv said it was fine, just to make sure she had plenty of yogurt, cheese etc. Try not to focus too much on each individual day, look at her diet over a week. Some days she will have very little, others a lot. I'd stick with 2 milk feeds a day unless she seems to want one in the afternoon.

Hi OP - here is how I replied to you on a different board. I am copying it here because I think it is useful to know that 20oz recommendation up to 1 year is not an official NHS position.

The 20oz minimum is recommended for babies between 6 to 9 months. The guidance for babies aged 10 months and over is 400mls (13 oz):

"General guidance on feeding infants is found in the Department of Health publication Birth to five (Department of Health, 2011). By 7-9 months of age, infants should be getting significant amounts of nutrients from food, and the amount of formula milk consumed should be around 600ml a day. By 10-12 months of age, the amount of milk consumed should be around 400ml per day as food takes over as the main source of energy and nutrients. Breastfed babies will continue to take the amount of milk they need as they obtain increasing energy from food and it is not necessary to know the volume of this."

www.firststepsnutrition.org/pdfs/How_much_milk%20_is_needed_by_infants_and_young_children_Feb16.pdf

Please do not take "food before one is just for fun" mantra seriously. It is a catchy phrase but it is not backed by any research. The 10 month old should have a balanced diet and while the majority (i.e. 50%+) of nutrients may come from milk, solids should form a meaningful part of the diet. 2 bottles should take care of 13oz minimum and you can see how it goes with the third bottle.

If your baby is not having 500mls of formula milk per day, NHS recommend your DC is given vitamin supplements. It is absolutely normal - you will probably need to do it at some point anyway until your child is 5 years old:
