Milk Feeds

So my baby is now 7 and half months old.
He has been having 4 8oz bottles a day but I think its too much along with his solid foods.
His usual routing is 6/7am a bottle, 8am some porridge, 12pm savoury lunch and yoghurt, 3/4 a bottle and then 4.30 a little pudding then 6pm his bed time bottle and at 2/3am he has another bottle.

Im thinking of dropping his 3/4 bottle and giving his a savoury dinner with his usual pudding? I think its just too much milk because he has a bottle before bed?

So instead he would have a bottle at 6/7am a bottle before bed at 6pm then a bottle in the night at 2/3am. ?

I know usually you would drop out the middle of the night bottle but he likes it and it comforts him back to sleep.

Whats everyone elses routines/opinions?

could you offer less rather than drop it completely

To be honest, we didn’t drop bottles at 7 months, mainly cos DS was not a big fan of food in the beginning.

If he is waking up for a night time bottle still, he might actually still be hungry. We find that giving DS plenty of food during the day stops him from waking up.

Anyway, we didn’t start dropping bottles until DS was 11 months old, and then he was having (approximate)

6:30 -7am bottle
8:15 breakfast at nursery
1130 Lunch at nursery
1400 bottle
1515 tea at nursery
1900 dinner at home
2000 bedtime bottle

He is now 14 months old, and has naturally dropped the 1400 bottle without prompting. he just started rejecting it when offered

Personally, I don’t think you need to worry about dropping bottles at only 7 months. You could try reducing, or wait to see if he naturally drops them later.

What makes you think it's too much milk OP?

Rosey94 · 10/09/2017 15:02

Because he won't drink his bed time bottle and just keeps being sick his tea time bottle. I read up that from 7 months its recommended they have between 500-600ml and that is 3 bottles so actually i think giving him a tea time bottle is too much

What you've read is the absolute minimum they should be having, not the recommended amount. It's also recommended that they only have solids a maximum of twice a day at this age. With that in mind, could you do something like this?

7am bottle

8am breakfast

11.30 bottle

12.30 lunch

3.30 pm bottle

7 pm bottle.

If that doesn't fit in with naps, how about

7 am bottle

8.30 breakfast

12 bottle

3pm bottle

4pm dinner

7pm bottle

Keeping the bottle in the night.

Much better to make sure they're having enough milk at this age than dropping the bottle too quickly Smile

He has only just started solids - milk is supposed to be the main source I think right now. My daughter still drinks loads of milk at 10 months. She is definitely eating more food as well 😀 he will drop them off himself. Our routine lol is :
645 bottle
715 weetabix
915 bottle
10 snack
12 bottle
1 lunch
3 bottle
5 dinner
630 bed bottle

Rosey94 · 10/09/2017 16:38

He has been on solids since he was 4 months old though so he just naturally dropped his lunch time bottle at around 5 and half months because he didn't want it anymore and recently iv noticed that he is just more interested in his food than milk. If he has too much milk he just sicks it all back up and thats what he has been doing with his tea time bottle and then not drinking his bed time bottle because still full from his 4pm bottle.

The middle of the night bottle i think is more for comfort and that he is used to it because as soon as he drinks it he falls asleep in my arms.

Where is it recommended that they only have solids twice a day? I've never heard that in my life.

How much does he take at nighttime? If he gets enough calories during the day then he might drop that one and then you can sleep! DS (11mo now but this is since he was 8mo) only takes a night feed if he hasn't taken enough food/milk during the day.

You can only try dropping the 3/4pm one. A day or two won't do him harm, and he'll let you know if he's hungry I'm sure!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 10/09/2017 18:20

It's here on the NHS site. It's been the recommendation for quite a while but most people don't seem to know about it.

Rosey94 · 10/09/2017 18:57

Its all guidelines. My HV told me ages ago to introduce 3 meals a day because I had started weaning at 4 months he was ready and it made him sleep better too.
Everyones baby is different. Its like they recommend to start weaning from 6 months but starting before isn't bad.
