Giving baby rice for the first time

Dd is 5 months and I'm going to give her some baby rice for the first time today.

I know to use some of her milk with the rice but I'm just wondering when I should give her it. She will be due a feed at about half 3 then again at about 7ish. I'm thinking the half 3 feed will be better as usually she's really crabby later on.

Also, do I try giving her the rice first then the rest of her bottle of vice versa?

Will appreciate peoples opinions on what they have done as don't really have anyone else to ask!

ThanksSmile

I didn't use baby rice i made butternut squash risotto as risotto rice is softer than normal rice. No stock just some herbs. There isn't any need to wean before six months though unless there is a medical reason like reflux and a dr recommends solids to keep the milk down.

Imo baby rice is polyfilla not baby filler. .

Aside from the fact baby rice tastes fairly horrible - when weaning I would give milk first so they're not frantically hungry. Then any solid food is a bonus if it goes down. Any reason you're doing that rather than fruit or veg? Baby rice is useful for thickening baby food that is quite watery is its only use in my opinion.

teainabed a lecturer that I work with that used to be a midwife advised me to give her some as she said it will probably fill her up a bit more and stop her waking in the night as much as she is.

Im a first time mam so obviously never done this before and you get so much different information from people its ridiculous! Confuses me even more with what to do!

Baby rice is revolting. If you want to start her on solids how about giving her a couple of bits of banana. Far tastier and she'll have great fun making a mess with them!

ProseccoMamam · 07/09/2017 15:09

I weaned early myself so I will not bore you with the 'you have to wean at exactly six months at the exact time your baby was born or you will make them so ill and it will all be your fault you horrid parent'

Baby rice has very little nutritional value. It's just a way to bulk feeds up and that's why baby sleeps longer. Try your LO on veg (veg first so she doesn't only want nice sweet tastes that she would associate with fruit). Avocado has lots of calories, butternut squash, puréed carrot, cauliflower etc. If you don't already know (you probably do), you should give the same piece of veg for three days in a row to make sure your DD isn't allergic before switching to another type of food. Once you are sure DD has no allergy you can then mix two/three different veggies together, good luck!Smile

Hi OP, i second the puree veg comment, if you wanted to try and help fill her you could always add a bit of the baby rice to the veg puree. I started puree at the 2:30 bottle, bottle first then an ice cube of puree veg (pea/carrot/broccoli/cauliflower were my main ones)

proseccomamam ineedwine99 yeah ive read this too. My friend gave me a cow and gate weaning guide which says about it all. Ive guess just cause my colleague was a midwife I've took her word a bit more however she was an old school midwife and things have changed!

I used baby rice a lot, just mixed with veg then fruit puree as its bland otherwise Smile

It probably will. Unfortunately your baby wakes in the night because she needs milk. Filling her up on shite may well help her and you sleep but it will be detrimental to her nutritional needs. Your baby needs milk.

Baby rice is revolting.

To you maybe, but apparently lots of babies quite like it.

It's not true that it has 'no nutritional value'. It has calories and therefore it has nutritional value.

Having said that, avocado has way more calories and nutrients so will probably fill your baby up even better! I'm obsessed with avocado. Fatty and delicious Grin
