Hi. I'm thinking of using puréed potato as a first food instead of baby rice or similar. Has anyone else done this?

I don't see why that would be a problem but it would taste really really bland without any seasoning. Will you be giving it alongside other purees too? Carrot etc might be a bit tastier.

FirsttimemumJen1 · 01/09/2017 20:49

Yeah, I thought I'd mix other purées in with it. Maybe some broccoli or carrots.

How old is your lo?

Pureed potato is horrible. Looks like glue, tastes like glue, ruins other veg when mixed together. I did it once. Took me ages to wash the blender. Never again!

Wheelerdeeler · 01/09/2017 20:57

Start with other veg. To get potato as a puree it turns glue. Vom

Never put potato in a blender as it releases the starches and makes out gluey. You would need to mash it instead. What about sweet potato? Squash? Pumpkin?

All the weaning clinics in my area recommend giving vegetables as first tastes and not to give baby rice at all as it is not needed.

I agree with others not to give pureed potatoes at all, give sweet potato and baby will love it though!

Ellas Kitchen and Annabel Karmel cookbooks have a good weaning plan for introduction with vegetables and have a planner. (You can get a shorter version of Ellas Kitchen which includes meal planner for free from Boots with Parenting Club).

Thanks for the tips!

Sweet potato is fab

Also other sweetish veg like carrot, butternut squash, parsnip

Apple and pear but add milk to reduce acidity. Plum too

Mashed banana thinned with milk (not too much as it constipates)

Then try mixtures to add less sweet veg eg courgette & pea, broccoli & butternut.

Scrambled egg is good for first protein, or mashed white fish
