Am sat here crying which is absolutely pathetic but that's hormones for you aye. (4 months pregnant btw) I just hate being misjudged and I really wasn't jumping on you. Thanks for clearing the air, I hate things like this and am not in emotional state today to handle a spat that should never have been. Thanks for the olive branch, that was nice. I'm off for the day as I don't think me and mumsnet should mix if I'm being such a teary wimp!

I gave a mixture of finger food and mashed up stuff and found that it worked for ds. Until he was about a year he would not eat much from the finger food, have a little suck and nibble and get a bit bored and fed up with it. I felt comfortable giving him a mixture because I knew I was getting food into him (I would be popping a spoon of shepherds pie into him whilst he nibbled a carrot) but I felt it important that he also experienced the textures of hand held food if that makes sense!

FrannyandZooey · 01/04/2007 13:56

Jetjets I knew you would get the answers you needed.

TC I think jetjets was on the defensive because I had already jumped on and off of her I always notice you being lots of help on threads such as this TC and I am sure jetjets will reread and take the informtaion that you've all given

aDad · 01/04/2007 13:59

we're going to start it within a month. Looking forward to it.

My question:

Is there a definitive list of the best foods to start on, and what to move onto after... a sort of month by month schedule for BLW?

Sorry if I should have read this somewhere obvious. We do have some idea and have read some bits but I've not seen any comprehensive lists/planners or anything outlining clearly what you can introduce when. I realise that eventually the idea is they are more or less eating the things you are but presume this has to be done progressively to some extent.

FrannyandZooey · 01/04/2007 14:03

aDad, apart from allergies / choking risks / salt content etc there is no reason they can't have a go at whatever you are eating yourself.

There's good suggestions for first foods on Aitch's blog (link earlier) on the FAQ page

FrannyandZooey · 01/04/2007 14:04

Oh sorry, my answer did presume you were waiting until 6 months before beginning.

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:07

Thanks Franny, I'll have a closer look at Aitch's blog.

Allergy risk was partly why i was asking, as dd1 does have a few, so we're on the look out for dd2.

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:07

and yep, will be 6 months in a couple of weeks...

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:10

Great. The FAQ page does indeed answer most of my questions.

(had been to the site before and not seen it!)

FrannyandZooey · 01/04/2007 14:21

I think I saw a link on the FAQ page specifically about allergies, aDad. Did you see that one?

AitchTwoOh · 01/04/2007 14:22

jetjets, let's be perfectly clear. there is not one person on here who gives a flying rat's arse whether or not you do BLW. do whatever you like, and whatever you and your baby feel most comfortable with.

to suggest that we, a bunch of complete strangers, have somehow banded together to promote BLW at all costs is simply absurd, but i take it that you've realised that by now. if you do a search through here and the yahoo group (or even if you have a read of the blog) you'll see that many issues, positive and negative, have been discussed.

of the negative ones, i can only really think of the mess and the 'not knowing' how much is going in. to be honest neither bothered me for the reasons discussed above. apart from that it was positives all the way for me.

if, however, you think that you won't not stress about the amounts then at least if you wait until 6 months you will have the confidence to try finger foods from the start and you can do some spoonfeeding as well for your peace of mind. it wouldn't be BLW, strictly speaking, but the key is finding somethign that you can be relaxed about as lord knows the baby is picking up on your tension as much as it is everythign else.

adad, there are a couple of allergy lists on the blog that are worth having a look at, but if you're not worried about them then it's pretty much a free-for-all. no peanuts until they're one, mind.

teecee bloody hell, 4 months already! where has that time gone?! hope the pork was deelish!

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:23

yes, thank you! Very useful.

AitchTwoOh · 01/04/2007 14:25

adad, one of the allergy links is from stefan, he's a nutritionist chap who writes the crazy dutch website that has the BLW guidelines on it. he's a sweetheart, his weaning schedule (!) has been a big hit in the netherlands apparently...

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:26

On the peanut front, dd2 is going to be taking part in a clinical trial for siblings of children with allergies, which will test for peanut allergy. So the lucky girl may get to tuck into peanuts before the end of the year anyway.

aDad · 01/04/2007 14:28

ah thanks aitch will check that then too.

BizzyDint · 01/04/2007 16:50

gosh how funny!! come to my house for tea jetjets..dd will eat you under the table!

in the early days yes some don't eat a right lot, but that's because they don't need to. i tell you what, dd's 10 months and when i see the size of those 10 month jars of baby food i think good grief dd would need a big fat sandwich after that to even start to fill her up.

They might not eat a lot in the beginning-I know i felt dd wasnt eating anything for ages then all of a sudden she started shovelling it in. She still has days where she hardly eats (usually when she's too 'busy')but others she'll eat tons. Like someone else said you worry a lot less about waste if you are just handing them bits off your own plate-i used to throw endless amounts of food away when trying to spoonfeed dd. The other thing i find is dd will eat more if i just give her a bit at a time-if i load up her tray she'll just play with the food or sweep it onto floor.

GingGangGooley · 01/04/2007 19:19

I think some eat more than others to start but it doesn't matter an awful lot as with practice they get better! you have to think that they have never eaten anything before si like most other milestones it is a huge learning curve for a baby.

Also don't forget that a lot of babies who go down the puree route hit around 8 months, refuse a spoon and then want to feed themselves anyway! Their intake drops as they have never eaten proper food before and they have to learn how to do it... So starting straight away at 6 months just means your baby will be ahead after a month or so even if his/her peers are already eating 4 ice cubes of sweet potato every sitting! lol

My dd eats shed loads and didn't stop today (my nan's 80th party so loads of food about.. she particularly liked the homemade quiche!)

Good luck hun x
