is ds getting too skinny?

hey, hoping for a bit of advice here.
ds was born at nearly 10lb and has been bf scince birth (he is nearly 1 now).
i started weaning him at around 4 mos because breast milk alone was not satisfying him.
he has been on fingerfoods and eating the same as me for his lunch and dinner (wheetabix, yogurt and fruit or crumpets for breakfast) scince about 9 mos.
he enjoys eating like this and will not be fed off a spoon by me and eats quite a fair portion for his age imo and always has a pudding after lunch and dinner.
a bit always ends up on the floor but alot in his tummy!
he also has snacks throughout the day and about 4 breastfeeds.
i know it sounds like alot but he has a good appetite, only problem is he doesnt seem to be gaining very much weight, i havnt had him weighed for a while but he just doesnt feel like he is.
hes not "skinny" but i worry that he may do if he continues not to gain much.
he has been walking scince 9 mos and is a very active baby (never stays still!) and was wondering if that could have anything to do with it??
its just as he was born so big i would expect him to be slightly bigger than he is now.
sorry about the long rambling post but would just like to hear if this seems to be normal or if i am right to worry? am taking him to hv next week but would just like a few opinions on mn please. thanks!

heya, my ds2 was born at 10lb2 or so, bf since birth, weaned at 6 months. He has weetabix or porridge for breakfast, maybe a sandwich for lunch, and then something like lasagne or shepherds pie for tea.

He is tiny - he weighs about 19lb, on the 9-25th centile and is 2 days of 11 months. He rolls everywhere, but doesn't crawl or walk yet. If your baby is walking, he is probably just burning off his food.

Birthweight generally can be ignored, they find their own curve, and I believe birthweight is no indication of where they are going to end up. Hth!

pooka · 29/03/2007 21:50

If he's happy and healthy his weight gain should not be an issue.
Some babies are born larger than others and either stay at the same centile, some drop down, some make massive leaps up. All different.

My dd was 25th centile (6 pounds 10)when she was born. Shot up in 3 months to 75th. Now back at 50th (I think).

DS was 75th (8 pounds). Went up to96th and has stayed there, in proportion to his height.

You might find when you have him weighed that he is heavier than you might imagine, particularly if he is tall/long because height/length seems to count for a lot in terms of weight.

just checked ds health record,
last time i got him weighed was at 8 mos and a week and he weighed 21 lb its just he seems to me like he would only be about 25ish lb now? not to sure until i get him weighed again!
but he has started walking scince then and just seems to have lost his chubbiness! has this happened to anyone else?
he was born on 91st centile and at 8 mos 1 week had alreadyslipped between just under 75th. dread to think how low on the centiles he is now.

actually he has got quite a bit taller in the past 4 mos, maybe he has stretched a little bit!!?? (or does that just sound silly??)

I found that DD's weight gain slowed right down once she started being active. She eats well but is crawling and just starting to walk and is also quite tall. Think this is just normal

pooka · 29/03/2007 22:06

Actually, have looked at red book and DS was 25 pounds at 14 months, between 75th and 91st centile. Was 28 11 at 17 months, just above 75th centile.

He weighs now what my dd did at 2 and 9 months, and he's 18 months. Different baby, different build.

Looking at the charts, your ds at about 12 months and 25 pounds would be only a bit below the 91st centle.

Honestly, if he's happy, walking, energetic, healthy, then there really isn't anything to worry about. He sounds fine. Weight gain seems to slow down at about this age - don't make the mistake of expecting the same level of weight gain as in the first months after birth, because if babies were to carry on gaining weight at that rate they'd be round!

pooka · 29/03/2007 22:07

I also read lately that paedetricians are warning against too much early weight gain. Slow and steady seems to be the key. I think.

heya123 · 29/03/2007 22:22

maybe i have overestimated his current weight, maybe not!!!???
if only i had my own baby scales, dread taking ds to healthcentre to be weighed hes so wrigly it takes me all day to get him dressed to go again!!
maybe i am worrying over nothing, dont get me wrong i dont want him round like a balloon i just dont want him to get "skinny".
I think its just where a friends ds who was born at only 5lb 11oz was alot bigger than my ds is now at 12 mos and i must admit i do tend to over worry about ds, just want him to stay healthy!

heya, don't worry, he sounds fine. Like I said, he's only a month or so older than ds2, and he weighs 19lb, your ds weighed 21lb at 8 mths! Ds2 hasn't even double his birth weight yet, which they're 'supposed' to do by 3 months!!!

Seriously, only start to worry if he fails to put on any weight or loses it AND is low in energy and nappies seem dry and no poo. Look for the sparkle in his eyes. If he's running around, of course he's going to burn off food and slim down - they chub up a bit at 8-9mths so that they can slim down! Now ds2 hasn't chubbed up, and I think will take after his brother who is thin as anything.

heya123 · 29/03/2007 22:52

ok i am feeling alot better about this now thank u, he definately has a sparkle in his eye and is such a cheeky little man! hes so playful and loving and his nappies are always wet and he always has a poo each day, sometimes 2!
i think i am just being a worry bum! (sorry about the silly expression!) and i will find out how much he weighs next week and hopefully find out he has gained weight and is doing well!

He sounds happy and healthy to me, speak to your HV if you are really concerned

badelaide · 29/03/2007 22:55

Hi Heya, my heaviest baby is now my skinniest child, sometimes her ribs make me wince but dp reassures me he was the same.

heya123 · 29/03/2007 23:03

i will definately speak 2 hv just for reassurance if nothing else, but theese are genuine concerns even if they do sound silly to other mumsnetters!

OP posts:
pooka · 30/03/2007 07:49

They're not silly concerns at all! Like others have said, the best indication of whether your ds is healthy are things like wet nappies, poo, sparkly eyes, energetic, happy and so on.
If you're seeing the hv next week anyway she'll prob be able to reassure you. If you're still concerned about weight gain, what I did with dd when she was about your ds's age was to add some creme fraiche to most things she ate, so stew became creamy stew. Lots of grated cheese and so on.
But have come to the conclusion that she's naturally more skinny than ds, who is built like a bouncer. Not fat, just well-built.
