i'v been BLW my dd 7 months, for 2 weeks now and am concerned i'm giving her too much milk. she has about 29 oz a day and somethimes looks for more. she will take a very small amount of water but hardly any; she seems to be liking her food and its obviously going in (as its coming out!).

have tried giving her less but she doesnt go as long between feeds without getting grumpy!
any advice?

oh, forgot to say, did ask hv but she seemed to ignore my question and just keep repeating that they should be having around 20oz

if your blw then milk should still be given on demand til a year

how's the blw going?

Mumpbump · 29/03/2007 16:57

I think 29oz sounds quite a lot, but not ridiculously so. I think ds was taking about 22oz or 24 oz at that age, but we weren't doing BLW.

Are you giving your dd milk separately from the food or at the same time? I have seen it suggested that you should give baby 1/2 their normal milk, then their solids, then as much of the rest of their milk as they want. Don't know if that might help cut back on the milk and increase the solids??

thanks mumpbump.
i give her the food in between the milk times. she just cries if i take the bottle away / give her a half portion!! re the amount of food, she is offered more than she actually takes so cant really offer more. will maybe try again offering half and half.

hi Pink - she LOVES the blw and so do i! she's happily chomping on half a plum as we speak!

I'm blw and DS is coming up to 8 months. I still bf on demand (so milk is usually separate from mealtimes) so obviously I don't know how many oz he takes. But what I do know is that sometimes he feeds loads (every 2 hrs during the day yesterda) but other times not so much, I reckon that babies are pretty good at letting you know what they need. If she's hungry for milk, then I would give her milk Food is more for experimentation at this age.

I used to give ds his food first, but then you run the risk of them cutting back to quickly on their milk. Maybe offer food first at lunchtime, but not tea?

good idea, thanks. then i guess she'll not cut down too drastically too quickly. will try tomorrow....

i'm pretty sure that i remember totting up what dd was drinking when she was about 8 months and it was something like 30 oz. i suppose it didn't bother me as i could also see that she was eating a lot as well. but i do remember seeing something about this 20oz thing and having a few paranoid moments... but then i forgot about it, tbh, cos i could see whe was happy with what we were doing.

AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 20:57

oh, and food was entirely separate from milk, definitely. i never fed dd when she was 'hungry', iykwim, that would have been a 'mare.

redbeki · 30/03/2007 10:29

I think 20oz is recommended. My lo has about 24oz.I think you can use this as a guide line, maybe she will have less as she gets to one.Don't worry ,if she wants the milk ,let her have it.You are doing BLW,afterall

PinkTulips · 30/03/2007 15:20

tbh ds sometimes has a bf right before dinner and still eats tonnes and other days he's offered dinner on an empty tum and doesn't eat anything... i think they really are quite good at regulating how much of what they want to eat and i don't worry too much about keeping him hungry for dinner anymore.

glad it's going well, it's just so easy isn't it?

i've got ds's 9 month check soon so i'm looking forward to seeing what the doctor and nurse say, lol

Seona1973 · 31/03/2007 10:37

The minimum is 20 ounces so if your lo is having a bit more than that then that is fine too. As your lo's solids intake increases then the milk intake will naturally decrease. If you are BLW your lo will probably be taking a bit less solids at the moment than a puree fed baby so will more than likely need a bit more milk to compensate and stop them getting too hungry. Doesnt sound like too much milk to me at all. It wouls be different if your lo was properly established on solids and was still taking that amount of milk.

thamk you all. will try and just give her what she wants!! but yesterday, she took 34 oz - but she did then sleep till 7.30 am!
