What is baby led weaning?

A big debate has sprung up on my Jan 07 babies thread and I first heard the term BLW. How is that different or possible as we have to give the baby the food anyway?

Oh I will go and have a look now. Thanks Aitch!

it's still a wee bit shitey and repetitive, though, imho. i didn't write it. tbh it's not a whole lot more complicated than 'you can just give them food to pick up and don't sweat about how much they eat cos milk's the main source of nutrition for the first year anyway'.
or look at www.babyledweaning.com. my dd is babybear.

I just had a look... thanks!!!

If this baby ever comes out... then I'll give it a whirl!!!

see you back here, then!

I just thought of another question. What age can they start feeding themselves with a spoon? I see they start with fingers.

it depends when you give them a spoon, i reckon. my dd can use a spoon and fork but i do notice the she tends to feed herself with her hands first to satisfy her appetite a bit then she moves on to her 'toys' and stats spoon feeding... she has been doing this for a while now, she's 15 months. i know if i remembered to give her the cutlery more often she'd learn to use it more, but i often forget.

I had never heard of BLW until a few weeks ago, thanks to MN, and I think it sounds THE BEST THING EVER! I can't wait to try it. I was supprised at the thread in Chat the other day saying BLW does not fit with how babies would eat "In the wild". To me it seems EXACTLY how they would eat. Milk until they start grabbing and eating your food. Can't imagine many tribes carrying round a blender...

Just wanted to say, thanks again for the info, got it printed off and gave it to mil (she is going to be looking after lo when I go back to work, probably when he's about six / seven months old) and she thought it was a fantastic idea and is well up for it!

AitchTwoOh · 30/03/2007 20:49

er, Mossie, you know that it's best to wait until the baby is outside of your body before you start giving them solids, don't you?

Mossie · 30/03/2007 22:06

Although any cake I put into my system now goes straight into him and bypasses my hips, so I understand.

correctamundo, mossie.
