Hello, brand new MNer here! Any thoughts gratefully received...DS is totally breastfed; is it OK to use formula for porridge? I have been expressing up to now. That sounds even madder written out than it did just in my head!!

It's not mad at all.Yes you can.
Breastmilk would be better though.

Welcome btw

MrsBadger · 27/03/2007 21:50

how old is she?
if >6mo and you're not treading round allergies you can use cows' milk.

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:51

Or you can just use water....? Rice milk or oat milk also a possibility depending on age of baby, ask in health food shop which ones would be suitable

lunablue · 27/03/2007 22:00

Thanks! I know breastmilk's better but I have to express almost every evening for following morning as so little seems to come out! Sometimes there just isn't time and/or I just don't want to. I know that's bad but honest! Thanks for all the suggestions. We'll do a taste test.....

You won't like the taste of it - baby won't care! I would use water myself - that is what I did. There was no way I was using formula after exclusively feeding. Over six months you can use cow's milk for meals.

lunablue · 27/03/2007 22:05

That is how I feel. Somehow having exclusively breastfed it just doesn't feel right, don't know why. Do you mean cows' milk in little bits in cooking but water for porridge?

How old is she?
Bit of cows' milk fine after 6 mths.
I used it for cereal and porridge.

maisym · 27/03/2007 22:49

could mix it with natural yogurt

TwinklemEGGan · 27/03/2007 22:53

I mix DS's breakfast cereal with cows milk. Before he could have cows milk (because I started weaning a little before 6 months ) I used to mix baby rice etc. with boiled water. It's bad enough that DS has to drink formula without giving him it in food as well IMO. Using cows milk in cooking also makes it much easier to freeze/reheat things as I'm always unsure when it comes to formula.

perhaps equal parts water and cream to make your porridge would max your calories/tastiness but min your cows milk iyswim...

Gemmitygem · 29/03/2007 14:20

hi Luna,

do you know how to express by hand (saves hassle of getting bloody pump out every time).

I just squirt breast milk onto his cereal, my DS is just under 6 mo so I also don't want to use cows' milk..

first I put just enough boiling water to soak through the cereal, then squirt away directly into his bowl. for hand expressing technique see www.workandpump.com. but I think an easier way to explain is imagine you had an enormous zit about the size of a malteser inside your nipple and that you were trying to pop it! Pinch in towards your chest and then out as if squeezing a spot! sorry if you already know this...

best of luck!

What is the problem with formula? Why are you against it?? Surely it is better that baby gets some extra bonus nutrients from the milk, as they wouldn't get this if you just made it up water?

Admittedly I had my reservations too about using formula - dd was exclusively breastfed for 6 months.... but I need about 6oz to make up my dd's porridge/cereal in the morning, and there is no way that I could express that much every day.... I've always really struggled to get much at all when expressing unless I'm really bursting at the seams... I was going to use organic whole milk - but not necessarily organised enough to have it fresh all the time - so organic formula did seem like a good option.... was rather alarmed at the list of other things that go into it other than milk.... but there are such strict regs around this kind of thing, I'm guessing that it shouldn't be a worry!

Good luck!

When DS started having porridge for breakfast we made it up with plain water. We ate it that way as well & tbh it tastes just fine . Didnt see the need to go to the expense of buying formula when water is just as good...not least because we avoided all dairy products until after one year for allergy reasons & we had fought VERY hard to avoid using forumla in the early weeks so didnt want to use anyway. If you are bfing on demand then they dont need any extra nutrients anyway.....DS is now 2.5yrs & we have porridge a LOT for breakfast (we are v poor atm) and I make it up with half water, half milk....you get the creamyness of the milk....but the cheapness of water so the milk goes further...if there are no allergies in your families then cows milk would be ok from 6 months....

MrsBadger · 01/04/2007 21:43

cause it's jolly expensive and highly processed compared with either cows' milk, EBM or water?

sjcmum · 02/04/2007 08:53

Can understand the bit about highly processed...does worry me a bit, but costwise - organic formula works out about the same as organic milk (at least at the prices in my local co-op... if I am less green and drive to a bigger supermarket I could probably get it cheaper)
