DS is 5.5 months, been starting food 2 weeks ago.. he is now on the following:

7.15 am, big breastfeed, maybe 6-8 oz? then a little bit of porridge and one teaspoon of fruit puree

11 am, 6 oz expressed milk, then a fair bit of veg, then either potato or baby rice, then offered the rest of the milk but never wants it

2.30 pm, 6 oz expressed milk

4.30 pm, offered water but never wants it

5.30 pm, one breast
6 pm baby rice and fruit- loves it and eats LOADS
6.30 other breast after bath
7 bed
10.30 - a sleepy 15 min breastfeed.

then sleeps till 7.

Just interested to hear from others, and to compare what your little uns are doing!

hi,

lucky you, dropping the 11pm feed already.. I'm still giving him 20 mins at about 10.30, but then he goes down happily till 7... I reckon he still needs the 10.30 feed because I know I don't have much milk at 7pm after a day at work, energy levels low etc!

I had no idea either about weaning and read about a million articles and books. Basically, it seems that the important thing is for them to get at least half their milk first, then have a bit of food, then the rest of the milk... and turn each meal into a little meal with both milk and food, with the aim of it eventually becoming their lunch or whatever.

DS has been starting weaning for 3 weeks, he's had loads of different veg, fruit and cereals, no protein yet, though (not 6 months till 7 April).. how old's yours?

I must say it is a bit of a pain doing all the pureeing and meals, but the babycook is a godsend.. like a little machine that steams and then purees the food all in one so it keeps the vits in..

anyway, let me know how you get on! Good to meet others who have a routine, as it's so untrendy these days (but so good for the mummy who needs her sleep!!!)

7am BF, not always much.
8:30am - breakfast, does not eat much
10:30am - lots of BF, sleep (am trying to give FF here, but only takes about 3oz)
12:00 - 12:30pm - lunch. Eats a lot, usually, puree and finger food (main and small pudding)
2:30pm - lots of BF, sleep
4:00 - 4:30pm tea. Good amount (just main)
6:00pm - small BF.
6:30pm - supper - yoghurt, porridge or similar.
7:00pm - BF both sides, sleep by 7:30pm
11:30pm. Dream feed. Started sleeping through this more often now.
4:00am - BF, small amount.

mish2 · 30/03/2007 13:22

not today im not as my dd is of nuresry now and my ds was awake every hr last night having a wimper then going off again apart from half 5 when he totally let rip and i ended up feeding him - had at docs who fully checked him said is fine as he gurggled at her like the flirty thing he is and told me to expect many more the same as all signs are there of teething big time - yee ha!

PavlovtheCat · 30/03/2007 13:48

oh dear Mish, sorry it was rough last night, LO was a right royl pain with her teething too. right now one of her top teeth are coming through and she has gone right off her food, grumpy bear too.

Gemmitygem · 30/03/2007 14:19

oh bugger, I'd forgotten about teething... DS is 6 months next week, no sign of them yet but spose it can only be a matter of time..

Finally plucked up the courage to join a conversation - new here!

Weaning is a massive headache all going wrong in terms of nighttime sleep since we started!

Routine is (all ish):

7.15 Bottle (6-8oz)
8.30 Brekky (massive portions)
11.45/12.00- Lunch + 2-3oz of milk
3.00- Milk 5-7oz
5.00- Tea
7.15 Bedtime bottle (7-8oz)

The problem is he used to sleep from his dreamfeed until 7.00 from about 6weeks now wakes up at least once or twice at night.. its killing us. Even if we give the dreamfeed our son still wakes up screaming, CC does n't seem to work and we normally give in with a bottle and takes 3oz ... keep trying to change the daytime routine but nothing helps... can only hope he's teething and will grow out of this.

PavlovtheCat · 30/03/2007 15:10

Fatton welcome to MN {smile} how old is your LO? Ours slept most of the night, waking once or twice, jsut for food until 6 months, then teething set in waking almost every hour for a bit, teeth came in and I had buggered up the routine as I had BF each to get back to sleep (needs must due to other stuff going on), however, it has mostly settled now, been losely following Pu/PD.
Eating, today has gone right out of window - no longer 7-7 routine, more like no food, but BF constantly routin! Top teeth due any time...

PavlovtheCat · 30/03/2007 15:11

Gemmitygem - it took months for Los to come thourgh. About 8-10 weeks. Although dribbled from 3 months!

Gemmitygem · 30/03/2007 15:45

welcome fatton, you'll be addicted in no time!

pavlov, seems strange how much it varies from baby to baby with teething, I understood that some start with it at 3 months!

those who are giving a feed at 2.30 like me, do you find babe is hungry? cos DS isn't at all, as long as he had a good milk plus food at 11. I leave 6 oz of EBM with the nanny, and she says he just about drinks it but isn't really convinced..

my main prob is not having enough milk in the early evening cos I'm knackered after work, but spose he'd wake up if not getting enough..

mish, all respect with dealing with 2 little ones! I can't believe how hard it is, even with the luxury of a nanny (as working)...

I love reading this .. it reminds me exactly how I felt first time reading .. I had timetables and everything

hold on to it girls .. you will never do it the same way again .. and you forget it all so quickly once they get a little bigger

Twiglett · 30/03/2007 15:50

how I felt first time weaning

aestheticgirl · 30/03/2007 16:18

Hiya

Just started weaning lo, he's 5mo and has slept through the night since 8 weeks. I'm only 4 days in to the weaning but he loves his food and never refuses anything (he's not very big, no idea where he puts it!)Just giving him a little food after one of his feeds.

mish2 · 30/03/2007 18:38

well today he has been a happy chappy but seems to have gone of his grub and is not as enthusiastic - hes too only just a toot at 5 months but a big fatty - i wont force the issue of food if he doesnt want it as its still early days - he had some slop for tea tonight and refused his bottle before and afterwards so hopefully he will take a nice fat bedtime bottle and a guzzle of calpol to give me 12 hrs of bliss - i can dream!! actually gemmittygem i vowed after dd birth i wouldnt have another but so glad i did - its big love with my boy and my dd is like a walking ebtertainment centre for him so in some ways its eaasier except i miss that sleeping when they sleep bit being a lazy beast!! My boy has just peed on my knee so off i pop - oh the joys!

fattongirl · 30/03/2007 18:58

hi again

Son is 7 months started weaning just before 6 months when started necking 10oz and thought enough was enough! I think I just need to stick with it, it sounds like its his teeth, bottom two popped through at 5 months I think the top two are taking a little more effort! Whatever I do during the day won't eat/drink any more just self regulates.... wish the teeth would hurry up I'm exhausted !

mish2 · 30/03/2007 19:30

it would be nice if when my boy woke in the morning he had a full set! My dd teethed from about 3 months too and when she was getting her back molars (the worse) she was just past 2 (yes it goes on that long!!) and we had a horendous time - hers are wobbly now at 4 and i just cant wait to go through it with a 4 yr old - please someoen tell me it doesnt hurt a 2nd time for all our sakes! Anyway he had a 7oz bedtime feed and is now fast asleep dosed up on medised so i wil report back onthe miracle or lack of miracle of medised!

sjcmum · 01/04/2007 12:45

Just to add to the discussions... the routine which seems to work for us is based on EASY even now dd is weaned... she always eats much better if it is soon after a sleep... so this is roughly what we do...

6-7am ish - breastfeed, then after about 2 hours awake, she'll have a nap for about half an hour, sometimes longer. Then whenever she wakes up she'll have an enormous breakfast - normally this is sometime between 8.30 and 10am, and probably will finish with a bit of a breastfeed. When she has been awake for about 2 - 2.5 hours again, she'll sleep again for maybe 40mins ish, and then have lunch when she wakes up - again this can be anytime between 11.45 and 1.45 - just depends how much she sleeps. She'll probably have a little nap briefly in the afternoon and a breastfeed after that... and then dinner is normally 5-5.30ish whatever else has happened during the day, with a breastfeed... and another final quick feed at bedtime at 7ish. She still wakes once quite often for a feed, but this is gradually getting later and less often.

Does make life a bit more flexible as you don't have to stick to rigid timings, and you can just keep them awake a bit longer if you need to etc. Hope that helps! She is 7.5months.

(One other thing... my dad is a retired paediatrician and claims that teething doesn't really exist.... hmmmm... not sure about that - but he did suggest that actually what is happening is that babies in their first year are getting a series of minor infections and bugs which can make them feel a bit rough.... it does at least put a different perspective on things if you wonder why your lo has symptoms for weeks on end and no teeth appear...)
