Fear of baby choking on finger foods!

Hello everyone!

I've been weaning my 7 month old
for several weeks now, he's moved on from pureed foods to lumpier textures. I'm trying now to introduce more finger foods but I am absolutely terrified of him choking if he bites off more than he can chew, literally!

Does anyone else have this fear and if so how do you manage to overcome it? Amy tips or advice would be most welcome.

Thank you!!

Yep! DD is 9 months old and has 6 teeth and doesn't seem to gag anymore. But at first I used to panic every time she ate something! And I'm quite a relaxed person generally.

It's all normal though whilst they get used to food. I just took it slowly.

It's very, very rare for a child to choke... even in Scandinavia where they don't advise you to cut your grapes in half! Read up on what to do if a child chokes so that you know what you can do. If you're right there, nothing is going to happen.

Yeah. In Finland they are so much more relaxed. We never cut the grapes uo. Didn't use those mesh things people put fruit into etc.

I started with soft finger food like boiled carrot batons and cauliflower florets. I tried choking on one but couldn't Grin I'm a bit odd! Haven't progressed past this and DD is 9 m/o but has zero interest in more crunchy things, she'll do it in her own time.

I feel exactly the same. I started with stuff I just could imagine he could choke on (Ella's melty puffs!) and ive learnt that their gag reflex is really sensitive so they'll gag loads at first but this is designed to prevent choking.

Start with less scary things and build you. You eventually get used to the cough/gag response and it gets less scary Smile
