Any bread but best is softer crusts. Lightly toasted.
Cut into fingers.
Peanut butter great (smooth) or cream cheese or houmous.
Avoid jam or honey as these are just sugar!
Toast is a brilliant finger food.

I gave my dc wholemeal toast with unsalted butter but read recently wholemeal can be difficult to digest. In hindsight I would have given white!

autumngold6 · 24/07/2017 08:29

Wholemeal bread is high in fibre and often causes very messy nappies so white bread is best.

Crumbs1 · 24/07/2017 08:34

Whatever was in bread bin. With peanut butter, on its own, with scraping of marmite or jam, cream cheese, smoked salmon pate or whatever was to hand.

Jojobythesea · 24/07/2017 08:38

I love peanut butter and so do my DCs but I would be very aware of the strength of allergic reactions peanuts can cause too. 👍

newbian · 24/07/2017 08:40

Jojo latest research is suggesting earlier exposure to peanuts reduces risk of allergies. But as with all new foods with infants watch closely for reactions.

Unsalted butter, peanut or other nut butter (100% nut butter best I.e. no added sugar/salt), I've given almond butter, cashew butter, as well as cream cheese, mashed banana and avocado spread.

Hard question because in todays times it is very difficult to source quality bread.
Best is sourdough from spelt but not wholegrain.

But I personally would not give gluten to 6m old and if to give gluten then the spelt is better than common wheat and not yeast based bread but sourdough.

Zahrah5 · 24/07/2017 12:53

To what to put on it, in such young age, should be just some good quality oil, could of drops, olive, flax, hemp oil.
Their tastes are simple.

DS loves houmous, pate, butter - he'll demolish anything I spread on toast!

I've given him wholemeal a few times now as I had no idea it could be hard to digest. He's been fine but I suppose he's a bit older now - 9.5mo - and when he was younger it was only white as brown wasn't available.

Changerofname987654321 · 24/07/2017 22:24

Wholemeal foods should be avoided before the age of 5 as the high fiber content means they feel full up before the get enough calories. Honey can only be given after 1 years old.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 24/07/2017 22:33

Dd loves anything on toast. I find that cutting it into triangles rather than fingers is best as fingers tend to flop.

HLBug · 24/07/2017 22:44

Careful with the salt content per slice. I remember being shocked that my favourite white loft had 80% of DS salt limit in one single slice!!

FartnissEverbeans · 24/07/2017 23:04

NHS doesn't say that you should avoid wholemeal completely - the website says that it's good for children to try a variety of foods but not to offer them wholemeal exclusively.
