Baby won't drink cows milk

Salene · 04/07/2017 08:20

So my 12 month old won't touch cows milk nor would he entertain the idea of formula

Up to now he has been breast fed but I'm wanting to stop now and get him on cows milk

He just spits it out

He will happily drink water from a cup - he has never accepted a bottle either but no point trying to get him to take bottles now anyway as he a year old.

He will eat yogurts fine and take milk in cereal etc he just won't drink it

Does anyone else have baby this age or older who wouldn't take cows milk

Do I just stop the breast feeds and give him no milk and yogurt only etc..?

Mine won't either - we just give him water. He won't touch yoghurt, never touched formula (not for want of trying) and won't eat cheese.

It's fine, don't stress about it.

pinkyredrose · 04/07/2017 08:24

He doesn't need cows milk. No human does. Chill.

What about getting the 350mg of calcium a day though .?? That is what worries me not the actually not drinking of milk but lack of calcium

I really want to stop breast feeding and have cut out night time ones and currently only giving first thing and last thing but hoping to drop them too starting with morning onebover next week or so

Will he drink smoothies? Make them with yoghurt, spinach, almonds or almond butter. Cheese - on its own or in scrambled eggs etc. And don't worry. I'm in the same boat. DD will have exactly two sips of milk and then dribbles it out of her mouth and down her chest. While DS would drink pints of milk if I let him. I think I'm going to keep breastfeeding DD night and morning and just try to cut the other feeds. But even without that, milk isn't the only way to get calcium.

dementedpixie · 04/07/2017 08:38

3 portions of dairy should give the allowance of calcium. Doesn't need to be in drink form

Foreverhopeful22 · 04/07/2017 08:41

Mine can't have dairy terribly allergic

She has soya milk fortified which is creamy and sweet or coconut fortified

There are lots of varieties down the milk (long life) range milk shakes etc

Mine has daily soya yoghurt plus multivitamin

Whatslovegottodo · 04/07/2017 09:58

Ah your little one knows what he likes. Cows milk is for baby cows. We really don't need it. We are the only species that drinks another's milk.
A lot of the world are lactose intolerant.

For calcium look at fortified plant milks, fortified juices(tiny amounts for toddlers) and cereals. You can also start with mashed tofu and as he grows can introduce fruit smoothies with hidden green leafy veg - all full of calcium.

Mine didn’t ever drink cows milk either and they didn’t eat cheese. They seemed to manage with yogurt and milk in cereal. Both are healthy, tall young adults now.

Clickncollect · 04/07/2017 10:02

Sorry if you've already tried this but what temperature are you offering the cows milk at? My 12 month old DS absolutely loves warm cows milk but won't entertain it cold!

FrizzyNoodles · 04/07/2017 10:06

Mine won't drink it from her cup but loves yoghurt. She eats cheese and loves cheese spread on bread and will have milk from a spoon with her cereal. She also eats green veg so I don't worry.
I wouldnt start formula or bottles from one year old. I'm planning to start whizzing up fruit with milk to make milk shakes when she gets the hang of open cups as she won't have anything but water from her sippy.

The recommendations are 300mls of full fat cows milk a day if baby until 2yrs if not breastfeeding.

It's to ensure they get enough calcium, essential fats and fat soluble vitamins for optimum growth and brain development.

This can be made up of cheese, yogurts, milk on cereal - they all count. Custards, smoothies are all a good way to get a bit more in.

Infants need the extra calories until their able to gain enough from diet alone which is usually around 2 yrs. The brain develops at its fastest rate now and myelynation

refred · 04/07/2017 10:23

Oops posted to soon

Myelination occurs at a rapid rate between 1-3 years.

Here's a good article in the importance of a good well balanced diet for brain Feed your baby's brain

DS has CMPA so I breastfed twice a day to make sure I covered all his needs until 2. Those saying cows milk isn't required it's true, lots of cultures don't have it at all but will breastfeed longer eg Japan.

Anatidae · 04/07/2017 12:51

I bfd ds until 1.5 (that was quite enough, my hair was falling out in clumps and I had breastfeeding triggered rheumatoid symptoms.)

He will eat butter but he won't touch formula, yoghurt, cheese, cow milk, any ersatz milk substitutes, kvarg, skyr or fil.

So I don't know really - yes it's important but you can hardly forcefeed them :( just do the best you can.

redheadbarmaid · 04/07/2017 13:02

At 12 months mine wouldn't touch it either so just tried again a month or two later. He's now nearly 2 and loves it ( only warm though )

Polly2345 · 04/07/2017 13:08

Have you asked your Health Visitor? I'm sure they must come across this a lot and have possible solutions and advice.

Penfold007 · 04/07/2017 13:10

My DD was exactly the same and has never taken to cows milk. Our GP was very laid back about it unlike the Health Visitor who got very stressed about it all. GP encouraged me to explore calcium rich none dairy foods which worked well for us.

sashh · 04/07/2017 14:12

I was like that. My mum took me to the Dr and he took hold of my ample thigh and said, 'well she'd getting it from somewhere'.

I still don't drink milk, it makes me feel sick and the smell is terrible.

I'm 50.

Salene · 04/07/2017 15:34

Yeah he happily takes yogurts, cream, milk in cereals , cheese etc so will just make it up that way then and try him on milk again maybe in a few weeks once he totally weaned from breast

Looks like I was worrying about nothing

@Salene Did your little one eventually start drinking cows milk after you weaned him off breastfeeding? I’m looking to stop soon but my son refuses bottles and spits out cows milk when I try him with it! X

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 16/09/2023 07:58

@poppet131 neither of mine would drink much until BFing stopped completely and there had been a break of around two weeks. Are you wanting to stop BFing? Wink
