Ideas for protein?

8mo is allergic to eggs and fish, and we've also been advised to go carefully with legumes (so chickpeas and lentils) until we've had the full allergy testing. I'm struggling with ideas for protein for him as DD lived on cheese and scrambled egg! Also a huge number of the meals the rest of us eat involve fish, lentils etc so there's less ability to just save him some of our dinner.

Obviously I can do plenty of grilled chicken, bolognese and, fingers crossed, falafel and hummous. However given that we don't know how he'll react to some things, I'd rather wait until we have these things as a family meal so we can test them out. But given that I might be better batch cooking him some food in advance, does anyone have some good suggestions for extra protein?

Have you tried omelette? It's usually a good finger food if you cut it into strips.

They don't need as much protein as you'd think, I can't remember the exact amount though.

Is he OK with dairy?

Thurlow · 26/06/2017 20:38

Dairy yes, but omelette definitely not.

Everyone, the baby on question is allergic to eggs!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 26/06/2017 20:42

Sorry, didn't read your post properly, am obviously very busy and it's nothing at all to do with the WineGrin.

No, don't give him omelette, which idiot suggested that...Smile

Just had a look and it seems weaning babies need something like 12g a day (although couldn't find definite amount)

Iirc 2 x petit filous has enough protein for a baby around that age. Obviously you don't want them eating them all the time, but gives you an idea.

Porridge and milk has protein. Bagel with cream cheese? How about something like turkey meatballs.

And all the cheese :)

Obv bagel might be a bit much for an 8mo, but little fingers with cream cheese might work?

Pasta!

RedSandYellowSand · 26/06/2017 21:05

Put the protein in breakfast (milk, yoghurt) and snacks (cheese - soft and hard, yoghurt) some days, and keep main meals lowish in protein.
Mine loved (and still do) chicken thighs and drumsticks - so the brown meat rather than just the white breast.
Pork and apple, turkey or beef meatballs.

Everyone Grin I was trying to be polite!

Milk and cheese he can mainline so that's good. Turkey meatballs is a great idea, they'll be easy to freeze up.

Think I've just about recovered from my faux pas BlushGrin.

Don't forget that there is protein in things like brocolli, sprouts, spinach and even bananas. I've sure you'll have no problem getting enough protein into him at this age, especially as it will be in his milk Smile

Meatballs were popular here, and savoury muffins (obviously you'd need an egg-free recipe) which you could put cheese, ham, bacon etc in.
