8 month old finger foods?

Hi

I have an 8 month old son who has been on 3 meals a day for a good month or so. He has porridge for breakfast and we use jars or pouches for his lunch and dinner (I know they arnt the best and are expensive but we are having a major house re-furb and I'm still waiting to have the gas connected to my hob so I can't actually make him my own purée yet as I can't steam veg etc).

At a baby group I go to one of the girls said she gives her son sandwiches (he's 11 days older than my son). He has the odd bit of toast if I'm making some but I'm terrified of chocking so he tends to have purée, yogurt etc and can feed himself with a spoon as long as I put the food on the spoon for him.

So I suppose my question is, what sort of sandwich could I do? What do I put in it? Do I cut it into little squares or small? And what else can I give finger foods that arnt too scary lol. He only has 2 bottom teeth

Thanks x

I have a 8 month old and she has dairylea sandwiches. Babies actually need to choke so they learn.

My daughter as learnt not to force everything in her mouth, well kind of.

She likes pineapple fingers and those tomatoe baby crisps.

She likes breadsticks, chips and bits of chicken.

He does cough and gag if he rams something in to his mouth and he seems much better with toast now as he actually eats it and doesn't gag or cough. Think it's me that's worried lol. Unless it's something I've given him I can't watch him with finger foods.

Thanks I'll try the dairylea on sandwich fingers maybe or toast to begin with 🙈

Try with those baby biscuits as they just melt instead of crumb

My 8 month old had a small try of pureed bits and bobs but seems to turn her nose up mostly now so we have moved onto; chunks of banana, large bits of kiwi, strawberries, chopped avocado, pepper, cucumber, carrot, apple- you get the idea. Toast heavily buttered (she has heart disease and we have been instructed to fatten her up) Grin she also has those naughty baby crisps and rice cakes. You could also freeze some yoghurt into largish ice cube trays with pulped or chopped fruit with a touch of honey (baby ice lollies) xx

Definitely go with the fruit, my DD loves feeding herself chopped up banana, blueberries, strawberries, mandarin segments cut into 3 bits etc. For sandwiches we do cheese spread, egg or tuna mayo (just a little mayo obviously). Blocks of cheese, chopped up boiled egg. All yummy!

How about:

Sliced up omelette - you could do it in the microwave
Baked beans
Soup with bread to dip
Chunks of microwaved sweet potato - lovely and sweet, firm but not too soft
Dry cereal like Cheerios
Hummus and bread sticks
Twirly pasta (easy to pick up) with cheese
Quesadilla (dry fry two tortillas with anything you like in between - chopped ham and avocado and cheese was always a favourite here)

Tricky without a hob or an oven, but remember that chomping on finger foods helps develop the mouth and tongue for talking Smile

Choking can be scary but it's usually gagging. Have a look on YouTube for visors that show the difference. Basically, red face and noisy = OK, blue face and silent = bad. Maybe think about taking a baby first aid course as well so you feel more confident about how to handle choking?

BringMeTea123 · 15/06/2017 16:09

Thank you HeyMicky!

We have an oven and grill just no hob 🙈 you don't realise how much you need it and use it until it's gone!

I know that if he's making noise and isn't blue that he's ok. And I know it's just gagging but to be fair he hasn't done that in a long time now and he loves his food.

I'll definitely be trying some of those things for him! And will have a look at YouTube about what do if he does choke.

We have an electric steamer- not that expensive- pour hot water in bottom, add basket of veggies, plug in

arbrighton · 15/06/2017 17:41

And you can steam nearly any veg in microwave.........

HeyMicky · 15/06/2017 20:09

Oh if you have an oven then...

Quiche
Veggie muffins
Roasted veg sticks
Courgette cake

Also...
Chicken strips and noodles
Porridge pancakes
Normal pancakes/drop scones
Wrap pinwheels

TBH by that age I was giving mine whatever we were having, chopped or mashed as required

alicein honey is one thing babies under 1 year old shouldn't have. It contains spores that can lead to botulism.

BringMeTea123 · 16/06/2017 10:04

Oooo I like the sound of pancakes. He's spit his porridge everywhere this morning like he doesn't really want it so I have toast on the go for him 🙈
