my dd is nearly 7 months and as of last week, i've been offering her pieces of fruit and veg, once a day, around lunchtime. she has 2 bf and 3 ff a day too. should she be eating more and drinking less? when do i offer her food 3 times a day? i kn0ow milk is their main thing till they're one but how much food.

aaagh, this weaning thing is scary!

When I weaned ds, I did a few days of pureed veg at lunch and, once I was happy he didn't have an allergy to it, then introduced it in the evening mixed with baby rice to help fill him up. If you're doing BLW, I guess you just offer it to her in the evening at around 5pm (I would suggest). Ds was having 4/5 milk feeds for a good while after he started weaning. HTH.

oh, don't worry, it took us aaaaages to get up to the fabled three meals a day. i think dd was about 11 months. to start off i think i gave her 'lunch' after she woke up from her nap, but this was always after milk so that she wasn't hungry and stressed.
then we started to give her some breakfast (being lazy, she'd maybe wake at 7, have milk and a play and then we'd stumble into the kitchen at 8 ish for breakfast). and later, much later, we got our shit together to give her something in the evening. plus, it totally screwed up her night-time milk and therefore her sleep if she ate after about 4.30pm for a while.
it's all fine there's no rush. you've got another 5 months to get this weaning business cracked.

I've been giving my DD (6 months) bits of food (sticks of toast, fruit and or veg) at three 'meal' times so that she's eating with us at breakfast, me at lunch and I'll sit with her at tea. Really she's eating absoutely sod all so I see it as more about getting her used to sitting in a chair smearing food all over her and the table. Have to say I've been rather cavalier with the whole weaning thing and I'm sure it'll come back to haunt me but very little is going in at the mo I don't think it makes a lot of difference. Oh, and I always give her a beaker of water with meals which she takes big mouth fulls of and spits out all over herself. She still bf on demand tho.

pmsl at 'cavalier'. that's just a posh way of saying 'slack', isn't it?

gingerninja · 20/03/2007 14:41

ehhhum yes, but how do you not know that I am not indeed very posh.

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 14:43

all i need to know is that you are slack...

gingerninja · 20/03/2007 14:46

Ahhh, my secret is out. This is my first too. Imagine, the next is going to be going through the bins looking for some left over macdonalds. Bad Ginger!

olivo, kiki is now offered three meals a day (we're blw too, but she only really likes carbs lol) as we were doing two but she was howling seeing ds eat breakfast

Plus she has maybe 6 bf a day, sometimes more. Definately a lot less since we started weaning nearly a month ago (although she's only been eating for two weeks)

for lunch and dinner I offer her - toast, fruit, rice cakes, some muffin if I've been baking... she eats a fair bit. She had curry the other day, cheese on toast. I know she's eating as a lot does disappear, plus the nappies are starting to get solid

When I was just offering her steamed carrot etc she looked at me in disgust. Then I offered her a piece of cheese on toast and it went from there...

I'm glad I've read this because I was becoming a bit concerned about Ellis.

on my blog blah blah blah babyledweaning.com, my firend has written a piece about allergies. it's on the left hand side. it's worth a look as she has cribbed a table from Lucy Burley?s ?Optimum Nutrition for Children? which demonstrates just how little traditionally-weaned children are expected to eat. it's not too tricky to transfer the tsp measurements to bits of broccoli and pasta ans start feeling a Lot More Relaxed.

olivo · 20/03/2007 16:02

thanks for your responses. my hv has just raised an eyebrow when i said we were going down the BLW route but said go for it. but as i watch dd now chomping on some bits of carrot with broccoli in her hair, loving every minute of it, i'm very determined to stick to my guns!
must remember the word 'cavalier' - it applies to so much of my life at the moment!

olivo, i have been worrying about the exact same thing! my dd has 3 meals (but she doesnt eat a lot at all!) and 5 bottles a day! i'm trying to relax about it as she is healthy and still putting on weight at the 'correct' rate!!
i agree though this weaning lark is soooo tricky! good luck! keep us posted how you get on, it would be good to hear from someone else who is at the same stage as we are x
