Weaning an almost 7 month old - how is it going and food ideas

Have an almost 7 month old DS. Weaning is going well - we're doing a mixture of finger foods, pouches / jars and mashed up versions of adult food.
I just wanted to know how everyone else with kids a similar age is doing, and to also ask for food ideas.
This lunchtime we had a bit of a mixture of things. Breaded Mozarella sticks, which he nuzzled on but found difficult, roasted carrots which he loves, and a bit of bread with cream cheese. As this was all finger food based and most went on the floor, I am planning on a jar for tonight.

Oh dear. Hope dinner goes better! DS is very grumpy today, probably with teething, and that never helps with mealtimes. It's also screwing up his routine so meals are all over the place! But when he next wakes up i'm going to try something new, either pasta or mozzarella, haven't decided yet...

This is bu ft the nicest thread I have found for weaning on here so far. No judgement of pouches or ages Smile

DD is 5.5months and we started at the 5 month mark. A bit early but I really felt she was ready and she definately was. Only doing Ella's pouches so far but she loves it, takes the spoon to feed herself with it.

Spoke to the health visitor last week and she is happy with us weaning early. DD was only 4lb13 born and only 13lb now. Only put on 1lb 6pz in the past 7weeks so need to get more in her and she won't tolerate any more milk. She is wanting more and more puree each day and not dropping milk at all so they said to just keep going.

Did try a bit of banana the other day and she didn't seem too keen. Gagged a bit which terrified me, and I'm normally quite laid back. Have avocados and pears on this weeks shopping so will see how we go. Might try some mashed swede and carrots to get a bit of texture in too

FartnissEverbeans · 31/05/2017 18:26

Unexpectedbaby It was banana my DS gagged on too - maybe because it's so slippery? He's had it mashed quite a ew times since and it's been ok but I'm a bit paranoid about it now! Worried I'll give him a complex by staring at him like a loon every time he eats Grin

Avocados went down a treat! Haven't tried pears yet as they're a bit expensive over here but might pick some up now you've mentioned them. Let us know how your DD gets on Smile

FartnissEverbeans · 31/05/2017 18:30

FattyNoms Nothing exciting I'm afraid! So far his favourites are:

Mashed avocado
Mashed banana
Weetabix with purée mixed in
Ella's melty puffs
Heavenly organic wafers with peanut butter
Plain yoghurt
Mashed turnip

Ella's veggie lasagne was not appreciated, even though I thought it was pretty tasty! He's also not a fan of berry purees, I think they were a bit too tart for him.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 31/05/2017 18:46

DS is 9 months now but started with similar mix of baby porridge/pureed fruit/veg/pouches.
Big hits -
Sweet potato mash..getting less puree like with bits in.
Avocado and pear puree.
Make lots of what they like.. freeze in ice cube tray.
Mini omlettes/pancakes. Spanish omelette.
Soups..thick lentil soup or chicken noodle broth with bread soaked in.
Melon/mango fingers. You can buy a little mesh pouch to put bits of stuff in if you are concerned about choking. It's really handy for the early days and let's them get a taste of different things.
Curry..various sauce naan bread rice mixed in.
Baby pasta mixed with cheese triangle and a little milk. Or tomato based sauce from whatever we're having.
Babies often like stronger flavours than you think.
He started really well, went off foods for a couple of weeks but now at the point where i can't eat or drink anything without sharing.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 31/05/2017 18:47

Oh grated cheddar and Apple is also a favourite but messy!

Sweetpea1111 · 09/06/2017 19:27

What a relief to find this post - my daughter is 8 months old, who is doing well with puréed/mashed food, however I've been worried we are not progressing as we should. One thing which has stuck in my mind is HV saying we should be doing lumpy food after about the first three days...hmmm...we've had gagging and bringing up ALL previous milk/food, like others in this post. I'm finding it a little difficult to relax as always forward thinking about the next meal. I just can't get into my head how she will eat what we eat. Is it a case of mushing up whatever we have? Toast is always an example of breakie about now, I just imagine her choking on it! Anyway, we are mucking through, generally have banana or weekabix for breakfast, then spinach, leeks, other veg for lunch and pear or rice for tea (milk in between, 9 oz generally - going to cut back to making 6oz bottles to increase appetite. So then worry about how much should she be eating?!). I have rambled, but this feed (no pun intended) has helped.

AConvivialHost · 09/06/2017 19:37

She'll be fine with toast, they just suck it to start with. My LO is 6 months and loves crumpets, muffins and bagels, but they are mainly mulched and then spat out.

With regards main meals - I tend to serve what we are having (no salt added) and then blitz it with the hand blender, just leaving some lumps. So far salmon and mashed potato is the firm favourite Smile

FartnissEverbeans · 09/06/2017 20:03

Sweetpea, I felt like you did and still do to an extent. A good compromise for me was finger food that I knew would 'melt' - so I bought those packs of Heavenly Organic wafers and Ella's Kitchen melty puffs and rusks. Not the healthiest things maybe but they gave me peace of mind until I felt confident enough to try him with toast and non-melty things. Also they're great as easy snacks for when you're out, since they're prepacked.

Sweetpea1111 · 09/06/2017 20:25

Thank you for responding so quickly...i honestly didnt realise babies would suck on toast etc. I imagined them ripping off big chucks and choking! I will certainly look out for the rusks/puffs and give them a go too Smile

Sweetpea1111 · 09/06/2017 20:49

*the emoji at the end of my last post is meant to be a smile face but appears to be a bottle of gin on my phone!....freudian slip perhaps lol

FartnissEverbeans · 16/06/2017 17:22

A gin emoji is always relevant Grin

PopsicleToes · 30/06/2017 16:27

How's it going everyone? DS is now 8.5 months and progress on quantity of food is a bit slow but he will try and usually eat a little of pretty much anything I put in front of him which is a relief.

I've starte making and freezing a healthy breakfast loaf and pancakes for his brekkie which makes life a bit easier, and am mixing it up between finger food and spoon feeding. Evenings are often tiny pasta (well, crunched up spaghetti) in minestrone or with sauce and he will tolerate being fed a good few spoonfuls of that!

On my list to make next is some kind of croquette type things, baked rather than fried. Thinking potato & mince, tuna & cannellini beans, that kind of thing.

Interested to hear what is going down well with your babies at the moment or things you are planning to try!

FartnissEverbeans · 03/07/2017 14:25

I'm trying to make courgette cakes at the moment! I'm the world's worst cook so it's been an adventure Confused and I've now baked six batches, of which five have been so bad that they have been chucked in the bin! Anyway, following a panicked trip to a&e it turns out DS has an egg allergy so I'm going to experiment with an egg replacer tonight.

We're going to visit family in the U.K. this week eh oh I'm a bit worried about - we'll be staying with family, and their house is tiny and they always try to overfeed us so I don't know when I'll get the chance to cook for DS.

FartnissEverbeans · 03/07/2017 14:25

*which, not eh oh (weird autocorrect!)

PopsicleToes · 03/07/2017 23:09

Apparently chickpea water from the cans can be used as an egg substitute. And i often make chickpea pancakes for DS, it's just chickpea/gram flour mixed with water and olive oil to make a thin batter. Can grate veggies into it too.

PopsicleToes · 03/07/2017 23:15

This is where I read about the chickpea water thing! Actually makes me want to give it a try even though none of my fam has a problem with egg! www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/sep/29/aquafaba-chickpea-liquid-baking-egg-white-substitute

FartnissEverbeans · 04/07/2017 21:50

This Aquafaba stuff is intriguing! I'm going to try it. Staying with family just now so I'm not sure when, but I'll try it and report back! Grin

PopsicleToes · 04/07/2017 22:05

Cool, yes I would be interested to know how it goes!
