BLW - protein ideas for 7monther who can't have dairy or chicken

I am struggling to find protein to give my DD that she can feed herself. She has a cow's milk protein allergy and I have a phobia of poultry after a bad outbreak of salmonella in my childhood. DD loves lentil dahl (not spelt right) but it is too sloppy for her to feed herself so I dip bread in it. I have tried giving her wafer thin ham and she likes that but anything thicker she struggles with as she has no teeth. Any other ideas?

salmon steaks. oven in foil for 20 minutes. same with most other fish.

tuna. dd likes tuna cheese quesadillas. 2 tortilla wraps, make a big tuna cheese mayo sandwich, spread fairly thinly, blast in microwave to melt cheese and stick tortillas together. slice up like a pizza.

omelette. you can hide veg in too.

fishcakes. add flaked fish to mashed potato. you can do these more fancy by coating them in breadcrumbs and frying them off, add onions and herbs too.

sorry- just read no dairy! still some ideas there for you. have you tried any fish at all yet?

AitchYouBerk · 08/03/2007 20:12

have a peek on the www.babyledweaning.com blog, there are loads of chickpea and lentil burger/croquette recipes that are really tasty.
and i think dd was 7 months when i started giving her big chunks of casseroled beef or fried fillet of pork, that sort of thing. dd also loves bits of steak, the rarer the better. in teh beginning they don't eat loads of the chunk, but bits do come away from teh edges and they suck the juices out. give it a try.
also, you could try eggs now if you're not concerned about allergies and dd also loves fish. haddock poached in milk (recipe on blog) is a major comfort meal.

Thanks. I will peak at the blog.

I have tried mashing some white fish with mashed potato but it is hard to get it to stick together enough for her to hold onto. How do you amke it into a fish cake - does just frying in oil make it stick together?

Quinoa! My Jenson scoffs that stuff, he loves it and I like it as it's quick to cook. It's gluten free too.

ArtichokeTagine · 08/03/2007 21:17

You kind of use where you'd normally have rice or couscous. I only discovered recently myself. You rinse it, put it in boiling water, simmer for about 15/20 minutes (you see little curly white bits come out the seed) and it's done.
I just stick whatever I have to hand in it. I've made spinach and parsnip sauce. Mashed sweet potato into it. Chucked peas and sweetcorn in. Grilled chicken and veg on the side.
I've been known to chuck blueberries in and have it as a pudding or breakfast too.
According to wiki it's about 12% protein.
It is a bit messy but easily self fedable iykiwm! Jenson kind of scoops it out the bowl.

moogyboobles · 08/03/2007 21:27

Just to add it's also high in iron.

AitchYouBerk · 08/03/2007 21:28

i think it's also a great source of those EFA fishie oily thingumabobs too. but not fish, obvioulsy.

There's a recipe for chicken and apple sausages on Aitch's blog - I know you don't want chicken, but I also used it as a guide to make lamb, courgette and mint sausages, which dd ate (it seems she's not a fan of meat unless it's turned into a sausage!)

Also beans - I buy a great fresh italian bean soup from Waitrose (it's dairy free - dd is milk intolerant too) and dd eats the beans out of it.
